An employee tried to ignite a fire with kerosene at West Union, burning Dr. Basgett's dwelling and causing a death. In Cleveland a drunken man attacked his uncle's house and assaulted Miss Jane Matthews, leading to his arrest.
Nesbit a carpenter killed a young woman at Hopewood house in Lindsey Ontario after she refused to accompany him to Peterboro. He fired twice at her head and fled but was captured soon after. The inquest jury returned a verdict of willful murder.
In Jersey City on July 14 a late evening affray at Goowen's lager beer saloon on Newark Avenue involved Martin Curley and four Black men. Curley was beaten and kicked, then left unconscious. injuries threaten his life as four suspects were arrested.
Albany July 14 A disastrous fire at Greenbush destroyed half the business district and about thirty homes. Originating in Collander's napa yard with a heavy wind, the blaze spread quickly. Four Albany steamers aided the Greenbush department. Incendiary cause suspected with losses around 150000. Fourty families homeless. a boy named Bredt died.
Around 2 AM a fire consumed Ferdinand Frolisch's Steuben Street boarding house. Albert C Berry, a 36 year old Grand Army member with no local relatives, suffocated in smoke and died shortly after being removed to the street. The G A R post took charge of the remains.
