In Havifax on April 8 a naval inquiry reopens into the Atlantic wreck. Third officer Brady testifies about watch times from 6 to 2 and says the captain and four officers knew the ship’s position at 1 PM. He relayed orders to the fourth officer before turning in and recalls the drowning of Quartermaster Williams after the collision.
A witness described Captain Brady’s actions during the Atlantic disaster. He stayed aboard to help, refused to leave until all passengers were off, and coordinated lifeboat and rope efforts from the rock. In the first district Hawley wins by about 1300, Kellogg re-elected in the second by about 300, Barnum re-elected in the fourth by over 1200, Starkweather re-elected in the third by over 1000. Senate likely 11 Republicans to 10 Democrats, House still close with a Democratic edge possible.
