Joliet shoppers will enjoy a two day sale event with Friday and Saturday hours extended by the Joliet Retail Merchants Division to bring low prices and bargains to downtown stores for residents and nearby towns. The promotion aims to prove Joliet as the region’s logical shopping center and to highlight local quality and value.
Arthur W. Weiss, a 12 year Stateville penitentiary guard in charge of frisking entrants, was fired after a visitor identifying as a Democratic state representative Ryan refused search. Weiss says Governor Horner and thousands followed orders. the visitor demanded exemption and Weiss complied with the directive to search as instructed.
A Joliet area plan for a contagious disease hospital for about thirty patients is being developed by a committee of doctors appointed by the Will County Medical Society. Dr. Raymond J. Kennedy chairs the group with Dr. Philip D. McGinnis and Dr. Roy L. Watson. The society supports the proposal and calls on the public to back it, noting Joliet lacks an adequate facility and home care has caused serious risks.
The Rialto Theatre celebrates nine years since its 1926 opening with a full week of screenings. The first organist was Leo Terry, who led the Bartlet organ performances from 1926 to 1930, and Roy Rogan began as the Rialto’s first house manager after moving from the Orpheum.
Joliet policemen gathered at headquarters Tuesday afternoon to meet Mayor George T. Jones and Commissioner David Lentz. The event also included James E. Corcoran, John P. Eib, and Arthur R. Momper, with brief addresses urging firm yet courteous policing.
Chain letters of the dollar variety spread through Joliet this week hitting business houses and offices hardest. The letters promise easy profit by sending a dollar to the person at the top of the list, with others in the city reporting they have collected sizable sums.
Officers Sergt. Ernest Overbey Detective Allie Schoemig and Patrolman Elmer Bauer halted a suspected release plot last night. Robert Brown, 67, was arrested on a burglary warrant from East Chicago and six men moved toward the squad room as Bates seized a service revolver. Bauer, Overbey, and Schoemig tackled Bates and recovered the weapon.
Wallace Simmers of New Lenox won two Kiwanis indoor model airplane titles at Joliet High School gym. He claimed unlimited endurance with 3 minutes 34 seconds and fuselage endurance in 2 minutes 16 seconds, defeating Robert Brown and John Houbalt in the former and Felix Gora and Robert Cleary in the latter. The outdoor event is set for May 18 at the municipal airport.
A local tavern keeper admitted delaying patrons to beat a 1 am police check by ahead setting the clock by fifteen minutes. He said it helps clear the house quickly and protects his license, noting it normally takes about fifteen minutes to move the crowd.
An audience filled the auditorium of St John s Universalist church for the Joliet Symphony Orchestra farewell concert of the season under conductor Ralph Cissne. Music patrons who filled the seating enjoyed the program and the complimentary atmosphere.
