George Mahoney Jr new elected park board member rejects allegations of introducing politics to the park system He says he would resign rather than appear as a politician and claims his patronage requests were no more than other members He adds he will oppose any political influence on the board continuing to push for reforms as the dispute unfolds Continued on Page 20
A general inspection of police and fire department members is planned within a week or two. Mayor George T. Jones, Commissioner David Lentz, and the chiefs of each department will attend. Fire and police board members may be invited to the meeting.
A 500 member delegation from across Illinois will convene in Joliet May 22 to 24 for the Illinois Postmasters Association annual meeting. Local Postmaster J Walter Lowrey chairs the entertainment committee as state and federal officials address delegates. A banquet closes the social program at the Elks building.

Police Commissioner David Lentz announces there will be no more ticket fixing. He urges strict adherence to traffic laws and warns that saloon licenses will be revoked for violations. Police insist drivers must stop exploiting loopholes and comply with the rules at all hours.
Three condemned men John Hauff of Chicago Arthur Thielen and Fred Gerner of Rockford face electrocution for the Leanore bank robbery killings near Ottawa. Warden Whipp sets 1:00 p.m. as execution hour and assigns order by proximity to the chair. Families visit on the eve of death as the men seek prayers and last meals before execution.
Joliet plans a Thursday meeting of the board of civic representatives at the Louis Joliet hotel to select the outstanding citizen. Nominations close Saturday May 11, with the winner to be announced at a later open meeting at Joliet high school auditorium. The Joliet Advertising Club sponsors the event, and the championship high school band will perform before the presentation.
Former police commissioner Robert Wraith will depart for a month’s northern vacation in a few days. Upon return he plans to resume control of the bowling alleys he operated before his four year election.
The Kiwanis club in Will County announces Friday as the entry deadline for its indoor model airplane contest for youths under 21. The outdoor event at Joliet Municipal Airport was extended to May 17.
Mothers throughout the land will be honored as the nation observes its annual Mother’s Day. School children will participate in ceremonies before dismissing for the weekend and volunteers will help with household tasks for the day.
