Utility hurdles obstacles to improve phone service

A major Joliet telephone cable project began Monday to add voice paths in the northeast area. Illinois Bell manager W. G. Rowbotham says the work is key to meeting rising demand. Completion of trenching and underpass work is targeted near August 1 with 25 manholes and underground conduit to be installed.

Spectator campaign yields traffic ban on one side streets

The Joliet city council approves an ordinance banning parking on one side of narrow residential streets after The Spectator urged the change. City Engineer Bernard Prola will study each street to decide parking sides. streets under 28 feet wide are included.

Fire Chief Plans Hotel Fire Safety Inspection

Fire Chief Harold Rasmussen announced an city wide hotel inspection for fire hazards including fire escapes and sprinkler systems. He urged the city council to draft a stricter ordinance with tougher penalties for noncompliance.

Jobless claims dip again in week ending June 27

The number of unemployment benefit claims fell to 81,965 in the week ended June 27, an 1.7 percent drop from 83,375 the prior week. Roy F. Cummins, state labor director, notes the total is less than half of the 176,369 applicants a year earlier on June 28, 1958.

City to condemn downtown police and fire stations

City Manager Chester B. Lewis will be asked to condemn the police and downtown fire stations after inspectors found more than 40 violations. Acting Mayor Paul Friedrich will present the request upon Lewis’s return from vacation, with relocation plans favored to avoid repair costs.
