Dr. F J Always, head of soil chemistry at Nebraska State Agricultural College, accompanied by Mr St S Teinbull, spent the past week in the Roy area. They observed progressive farming methods and praised farmers for independent thinking and soil climate experiments. The visitors stressed cooperation between college and farm experiments to solve unknown soil and climate issues locally.
The Roy Real Estate and Abstract Co asks for crop samples for exhibition to showcase best results. Dr. Cates of Solano hotel visited town seeking homestead land and promotes Campbell's Scientific Farmer as essential reading for successful farming and agricultural knowledge.
The Ocate post office and N Weil store were entered by burglars who stole eight dollars from the post office funds and stock worth about fifty dollars including clothes and shoes. Entry was gained by prying a rear window bolt. Tags from stolen goods were found along the highway suggesting a run toward the railroad. Clarence Bowman reported the theft to Denver post office inspectors. No clues yet.
Eighteen cars of fat cattle shipped from Roy BiKay evening to Kansas City by the Roy Land' & Live Stock Co Floersheim Mercantile Co and Farmer & Stone. Another shipment of a similar size is planned. Cattle came directly from the range in prime condition to top the market. Shippers and accompanying men listed. a church group will greet them on arrival.
Ricardo Rodriguez 18, son of Juan Jose Rodriguez, was struck by lightning and killed Wednesday at four in the afternoon while herding sheep for Enrracio Gallegos between Logan and Red River. His body lay in an arroyo bottom until Thursday morning. He was widely liked and regarded as a bright, promising youth.
Residents east of Roy and north of Solano will host a district fair and exhibit of farm products at Pleasant View School House seven miles east of Roy on Saturday October 8. Bring samples of crops or stock to exhibit. no entry fee or premiums. J G Reed is chairman R W Boulware secretary J W Johnson on committee.
The Spanish American office reports a rush of job work pleasing the new management. It thanks town merchants for patronage and promises prompt and efficient service for all ad, job, and book work, aiming to meet readers’ needs on time. If business keeps growing, the newspaper venture will be well pleased.
Children arrive at school from miles out in country communities in various conveyances. The school system is praised for offering education equal to or better than eastern towns, despite smaller size.
George H. Ray, a young homesteader, returned Wednesday from a two month visit at his old home in Mayfield Kentucky. His father accompanied him briefly to seek a milder climate for bronchial trouble. Geo says things look little and crowded back East.
Homer Thayer, a young engineer from French arrived in town Tuesday to visit friends. He praises local crops, notes French irrigated land as inferior this year, and considers locating on a homestead here. Thayer is an expert steam and gasoline engineer and a fine young man welcomed by residents.
Ensign H Hawkins of 309 State Street Chicago represented the Salvation Army and led religious services at the school house last Sunday. A fair audience attended each service and Hawkins appeared to be a very earnest worker.
Western Texas residents charge the Legislature favors eastern cities and dense areas, alleging oppression of the western region and urging division into two states. They cite Texas history allowing division within the union if one state proves unworkable under central administration.
