The RoyLadies and the school district report a successful chicken dinner last Friday raising 51.20 toward a piano debt with total receipts 54.30 and 3.10 spent on supplies. The event drew strong support from the Men and Ladies with help from Floersheim Merc Co. and attendees from Springer visiting Roy for Chautauqua events.
The El Paso and Southwestern plans to plant beans in the heart of El Paso to showcase farm land value and stir regional interest. The firm provides seeds and financing to farmers, spends on preparedness, and holds a million dollars in Liberty Bonds as patriotic support. Judge Leib of Raton traveled from Tucumcari on judicial business, a pleasant figure with many friends. Mrs. W. H. Baum hosted the Tuesday Club at her country home with strong attendance and refined refreshments. Barry Hughes and Miss Ross were among Solano’s youth in attendance.
W H McCarger manager for Wilson Co of Mills visits for tractor repairs reporting an inch to three quarters of rain on their tract and 1700 plus acres of trijoles promising, with two tractors breaking sod at 60 acres daily. W F Burris and wife from Mills area file Final Proof after homestead hardships. M W A Ry to hold June 23 Plaza celebration with music oratory feasting and rejuvenation for members and visitors.
The Chautauqua season left town with mixed reviews as audiences praised some acts while others drew tepid reactions. Supt Buffon and Chester Giddings stayed through the week, boosting town ties. social cordiality was noted. Performances ranged from the Glee Club to Miriam Franklin and Count Sobeski, with Rev Thomas and the Homeland Entertainers highlighted for strong shows at the Sunday rally and sermon by Rev Hearn.
The Red Cross drive expands with Taft appointed to direct relief efforts and 108 members pledged. Local canvassers including the Guiper twins and Mrs. Henrietta Russell mobilize volunteers, with funds totaling $1.60 per contributor sent to Washington. July 4 picnic planned at Sugar Loaf Mountain 20 miles northeast of Mills with water, food, and a baseball diamond near the site.
The afternoon wind storm cut the program short and evening entertainment featured a selective draft of home talent. The ladies Quartett from the C E and a duet by Miss Bruce and Mr Applegate Gole by Miss Martin, plus a reading by Master Donald Gibbs, highlighted amateur acts. Homelanders offered Rag-time but with a short repertoire. The tent came down Monday and attendees sighed at vacation end, preferring home evenings to night sessions.
The mayor calls Roy citizens to aid the Red Cross Fund and assist the Ladies of Roy in their humanitarian drive. He hopes Red Cross week reports reflect credit on the town and community. The Mills RFD will switch to daily mail delivery from weekly.
Rain fell Monday evening, bringing relief after drought worries. Pronto 88 inches in the gauge at the depot promises a good wheat crop and early bean prospects. another soaking could flood the market, possibly requiring extra rail service to move surplus.
Mr and Mrs George Wagoner of Mills welcome a nine pound boy born Friday June 15 at Dr Selfs Hospital Roy.
W H Halterman of Roy returns fifty dollars in seed money from the State Board after forming a partnership with Miss Bessie Wood of Strong City Kansas, labor shared and crop divided, investigator Mr Abernathy acknowledges the refund as the first in the state.
