Biography of George McGowan Died at Challis Idaho

George McGowan born May 1 1840 near Montreal of Scotch parents. He traveled from Canada to the United States in 1855, worked across Nevada California British Columbia Montana Wyoming Utah and finally Idaho. He married twice, leaving five children, and died in Challis on September 8 1903 aged 63. He was regarded as honest charitable and a kind parent.

Custer Lembi Sougey School Association Convention

The Custer Lembi Sougey School Association held its annual convention in Challis on September 6. There was strong representation from the Sehing Schools of both counties. Officers elected: President R. S. Nickerson Challis. Vice Presidents Bonner and Mrs D Cameron Challis. Secretary Clinton Lee Salmon. Treasurer Wm Beakley Mackay. Next year’s convention will be in Salmon City. Attendees from Gibbonsville, Weiser, Salmon, Mackay, and neighboring towns were listed.

Blood Poison Fears After Mining Accident at Skylark Mine

Martin Joyce of Bayhorse, a respected Custer County resident, was injured by a falling rock at the Skylark mine. He dressed the wound in Challis, returned to work, but swelling and pain grew, prompting friends to send him toward Salt Lake for medical care.

A Great Mineral Region in Western Custer County

Seafoam and Sheep Mountain mining districts in western Custer county are described as a premier mining region. Henry Duffy, a local mine owner, visited Challis and Yellow Jacket after a summer at Seafoam, noting seven feet of high grade ore at Steve Smith's Greyhound Mountain claim averaging $100 per ton. The belt holds about five hundred mineral locations with lead, silver and some gold, and large, wide ledges. Despite no boom yet, visitors deem it among the best mineral areas. with railroad access to Salmon River, it could rival Idaho's top producers.
