A Seattle letter dated December 15 1901 reports mild frosts and improving weather, calls Seattle the second city of the Pacific Coast with hopes to lead in twenty years, notes Pacific shipping damage, and observes rapid city growth, a large unsettled area, and modest living costs with meals around ten cents and steak at twenty cents. The writer references Tacoma Everett Ballard and local streetcar links, praising future rivalry with San Francisco and Chicago.
