Challis to Hear Rape Case Involving Local Family
Henry Daugherty a 53 year old man from Houston Idaho was brought to Challis last Saturday on charges of raping the 8 year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. P. J. Bonner who live nearby. Daugherty had been living with the Bonner family and allegedly attempted the crime while the couple was away. Daugherty was held for a district court after a preliminary hearing in Houston. He claims drunkenness as his excuse but that does not mitigate the crime. He was brought to Challis by Deputy Sheriff Boone and jailed.

The Challis Inster Omnium Literary Society drew a full house on December 27 for its first public entertainment. Performances included recitations by Ruth Cameron Mabel Jose May Paul Pierce Dorgan Jr and songs by Martha Keenan Wm Waters and small children in an optical illusion closing number Topsy Turvy. A second program is scheduled for January 17, 1902 at 7 30 PM with expectations of another high standard.

W A Woodin died at his home in Blackfoot after months with Brights disease. Born in Nova Scotia in 1855 he was 46. He came west in 1879 and led the water works for the railroad, later serving as sheriff and two terms as county treasurer. He leaves a wife and no children. widely known and fondly regarded in Custer County and Idaho Falls Register notes.
