A humorous poem from Allin Idaho recounts Flenniker and friends riding from Tin Can Ally to Challis Springs in a wild, muddy chase. Custer County Wins Bank Liability Case Ruling

Judge Perky ruled in Challis that Custer county bears no liability for checks issued by the treasurer drawn on the Bunting bank during its failure. The decision holds that county money kept in a bank for warrants is not legally the county’s liability once checks are issued. Several related suits include Greene v. Custer County and Chambers v. Custer County.

Challis Explorers Endure Harsh Winter Trek to Thunder Mountain

Sid Roberts and C. C. Tantphaus, seasoned mountaineers from Challis, traveled January 7 1902 toward the Eldorado mining camp on Thunder Mountain. After a harsh return via Morgan creek and Challis creek routes, Tantphaus survived nine days with starvation and exposure, while Roberts reached Challis alone, both praising Singiser route for the journey though warning of four feet of snow at the mines and dangers of the cold high country.

Masquerade Ball at Challis Observes Washington Birthday

Last Friday night Challis hosted the Mongal masquerade ball for Washingtons birthday. Attendance was down about half from last year, likely due to fear of smallpox. A complete list details those in costume and their representations, including individuals such as Coney Sullivan, Chris Carlson, Hazel Paul, and many others, plus hotel arrivals at the New Challis House for the week ending Feb 22.

A concert and entertainment will be held at the L O O F hall in Challis on Friday evening March 7 1902 for the benefit of the church. Exerceses directed by Mr F A Reed. Admission 50 cents for adults 25 cents for children. Program starts at 4 o clock. Cordial invitation extended.

Mining Claim Adverse Possession Notice in Idaho

Notice to administrator Meireacd Aextguy and others of B. J. Wright estate that Gow Bundred Dollars have been expended on the DEWEY lode mining claim in Yankee Fork Mining District Custer County Idaho for 1901 to hold the claim under state law. If co-owners fail to contribute fifty dollars plus costs within ninety days of public notice, ownership transfers to the subscriber. Dated February 1902 Challis Idaho. Local News reports also note mining and social events in Challis and Custer including court, deaths, new telegraph plans, masuqerade balls, and travel routes to Thunder Mountain.
