A Bar to Progress by Louis Gathmans on Army Gunnery

New Six Inch Gun Planned At Bethlehem Works
The war department plans a new six inch rapid fire gun to outpace foreign purchases by the navy. Bethlehem steel works will build it with a 3000 foot per second muzzle velocity and at least eight rounds per minute at 2500 feet per second. The Bethlehem breech patent aims to improve on the Vickers mechanism now licensed by the navy for 250000 dollars. Tests claim the Vickers device fired ten rounds per minute, while Bethlehem guarantees eight rounds in the same period.
