City council adopted a resolution calling for a special tax levy of one mill for five years to raise about $6100 if approved by 65 percent of voters in November. Funds would sustain services and boost police protection and sewer repairs.
J W Frye & Co announces a grand opening this Saturday at new showrooms on S Main in the Emch group of buildings. Owners Frye and LV Albright opened the store months ago and will feature a large stock of quality furniture with special merchandising from 9 am to 9 pm and family gifts. Paul Emch of Strata Aire Inc will present the Home Freezer in the new building next to the Frye store with models in his store room on the west side. A wide parking apron has been surfaced on both sides of the street.
The 24-team Men's Community Bowling League began at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Spaulding Recreation alleys with plans to shift the Friday second section to Thursday. Boxboard Ladies league moves to Friday. Ladies City League may switch to Monday. Top averages include Fred Kamp 187 and Russell Dull 185. Upcoming Friday schedule lists matches and standings updates.
Jay Rohrer and his wife plan to move into a new prefabricated residence on N State Street in two to three weeks. The one story structure, bought from the Adrinalack Log Cabin Co of New York, will include three bedrooms a living room dining room and a kitchen. Rohrer works as a printer at the Ohio Salt Co and recently left the Army Air Corps.
All veterans interested in playing on a Legion basketball team are asked to see Postmaster Herald Mougy at the Post Office.
Rittman firemen face Strata Aire office while Rich Motors plays Rittman Moose at nine. American Legion meets Ohio Public Service, and Rittman Packing confronts Strata Aire at the factory in a busy card of local bouts.
Action at the County Baseball Championship Tourney Labor Day at the K of P sponsored Wayne County event in Sterling on September 1 and 2. Rittman Press photographer captures moments as Carl F. Rittman Indians begin 17 sent workouts ahead of opening game at Millersburg expected to start at eight o clock Friday night. Probable lineup includes Dan Freeman Richard Grant Boyd Bodager Bill Ritter Richard Harrod Steve Volek Eugene Wallace Kenneth Plahuta James Petak Robert Rosenberg Frank Kitts with further entries listed. Coach Ashton Hall, back from Army discharge, expects a strong showing but will not predict outcomes.
A Sunday 1:30 am accident on Route 94 between the Sleepy Owl tavern and the Erie underpass left George Parkinson with a broken leg and abrasions after a collision with motorcyclist Bruce Harrond in fog. Eberts ambulance took Parkinson to Wadsworth Hospital. Harrond was unheld. Witnesses included Louis Filippi and Robert Kaylar. A separate Route 94 collision south of Rittman injured 10 when Kenneth Beaverson halted for a left turn then was hit by another vehicle on the east shoulder.
The Contract Bridge Club met Wednesday night for dessert at Mrs Robert Hickin's home. Guests included Mrs Robert Karlen and Mrs R W Ulm. Prizes went to Mrs Karlen and Mrs Basil Hardgrove. The next meeting is scheduled for October 3 at Mrs Ralph Overholt's home.
