Local notes recount the origin of three wild ducks at Rittman Cemetery pool with rumors ranging from intentional placement to migration. Residents Ruth and Clyde McCray enjoy feeding them, while broader community letters and visits reveal a slice of small-town life and memory of community figures.
Apple Festival will run October 2 through 4 with a Queen contest for single girls aged 15 to 19 from the Rittman area. Applications must be mailed to The Apple Festival Queen Contest before Sept 22. Five finalists will be named Sept 26 and a Queen crowned during the festival.
Plans for opening of Rittman Civic Center Friday Sept 26 were made Monday by Three Arts Club members at Mrs. Robert Arnold's home. The center at East Ohio and North State Street is sponsored by the club and city. Members will sell cheese and trail bologna at the Apple Festival next month. Mrs. Allan Broadhurst became president during installation. Wayne County Sheriff Glen Rike spoke on The Law noting rising teen age crime. Refreshments were served by the hostess and Mrs. Ashton Hall.
Services were Saturday for Pearl M Scheetz 71 of Rittman who died Thursday at Dunlap Memorial Hospital after a week as a patient. Born in Grafton she lived most of her life in Rittman and worked 33 years as cashier at Ohio Central Telephone Company retiring in 1963. Surviving: son Russell and sister Mrs Anna Turner both of Rittman and a grandson. Gillman Funeral Home led arrangements Pastor Daniel KR Remaley officiated burial at Mound Hill Cemetery Seville.
Mrs Naomi B Imhoff 68 of Sterling Al died Monday after a long illness at Wadsworth Rittman Hospital Ben and Ed Imhoff of Rittman her sons and Delores Bauman Jannette Stoller Joann Widmer Martha Riggenbach and Sandra Amstutz her daughters survive along with a brother and several sisters and 19 grandchildren Funeral services will be Thursday at Gillman Funeral Home and Apostolic Christian Church with calling hours today and tonight Burial will be in the church cemetery
Vernon Phillips announces division chairmen and targets for the United Fund drive to raise 18600, ending Oct. 30. Goals include professional 700, special gifts 700, commercial 3400, Rittman divisions 6400, residential 2400, Morton Salt 2100, small industry 900, schools 900, and clubs 550. Funds support 12 organizations including Salvation Army and Red Cross.
City council hears survey showing salvage at the landfill halted and a new attendant hired. Officials discuss illegal dumping arrests, burning issues, and costs in Wadsworth Medina Orrville and Wooster. Mayor notes income tax option. resignation and zoning appeals board changes noted. Meeting with Ohio Inspection Bureau planned.
The Chippewa Subdistrict schedules an October 23 hearing at 10 a.m. in Wooster to hear objections to flood control appraisals. Exceptions due by October 6 to the Clerk of Courts in Philadelphia. Final appraisal records filed August 5 show $788,900 in benefits, $226,500 in damages, and about $254,000 in other costs.
