Break-In At Rittman Oil Company Nets $1200
Thieves broke into B and W Oil Co on Labor Day weekend using a roof door and a blow torch to force a safe. About $1200 in cash and a booster club collection were taken. the loss was insured. Employee James Weaver discovered the break-in when he arrived to work on his car. The method echoed a similar garage theft at Rupp Brothers earlier in summer.

Wayne County Joint Vocational School riders depart at 8 15 a m from First Street School and ride back from Joint Vocational at 3 00 p m. West Hill kindergartners travel to Stop and Go Market in the morning then return to West Hill at 11 a m. First day of school is Wednesday Sept 3 with Sacred Heart School transportation unchanged.

Open School levies hinge on Thursday preview by Rittman band
The Rittman High School Marching Band offers a Thursday night 7 p.m. preview of half time shows with the football team, coaches, and cheerleaders. Avon’s band and majorettes perform Friday at 7 p.m. if field conditions allow. The group then plays Wednesday afternoon at the Wayne County Fair Grounds in Wooster between horse races.

Nearly 3000 fans watched softball at Industrial Street Park as Lucas area teams hosted a Labor Day weekend tournament. Ike Ramsier led the event with help from Barbara Ramsier and Glenn Uiman. Mick Lawton Die Cast, Birmingham, Sterling Heights, Hays Riggin Builders, Tallmadge, Wayside Inn from Lucas and others competed, with Wayside Inn defeating the field to claim top honors in a weekend praised for sportsmanship and well officiated games.

Rittman to Hike Gas Rates Under Ohio Tax Plan
Rittman residents will pay an additional one cent per thousand cubic feet for natural gas starting Sept. 1. The increase follows the Education Tax bill passed by the Ohio Legislature raising the state excise tax on utilities from three to four percent, costing Columbia Gas of Ohio about 2.43 million dollars annually. The higher charge is passed to customers via the contract tax cost clause, according to Columbia Gas of Ohio.

Rittman Chamber Plans Float For Apple Festival Parade
Rittman Chamber of Commerce will enter a float in the Apple Festival parade on Thursday October 2. Members meet Tuesday and plan to meet Monday to finalize float plans with chamber wives assisting. They will ask merchants to sell advance tickets for amusements. Rides priced six for $1. Discussion includes part time chamber manager need. A letter from Russell Frey discussed local fire prevention cooperation and his offer to help. Gillman noted fire prevention materials and school tours are distributed and visual aids are offered to schools.

Apple Queen Contest stages in Rittman festival
Apple Festival in Rittman will name an Apple Queen on October 2 to 4 with five finalists and a parade on October 4. Contest runs for single girls ages 15 to 19 from the Rittman area, submissions due by September 22, with the winner notified September 26.
