Rittman Papooses surprise Orrville with a 7-7 football tie at Orrville as Whims Greer and Baker power a sharper attack. Culp scores from three yards after a sustained drive while Collier to Baker completes the extra point. Becerra Marshall and Culp anchor the backfield.
A mechanical failure in a cut off switch caused a 20 minute outage in the South Main Street area Thursday morning at 7:40. Ohio Public Service Company manager H C Longworth said a bronze casting in the switch fractured when metal crystallized, breaking into two parts and stopping service.
Construction at the Press plant advances in fall weather with a new rear extension for printing machinery. The upper floor will host offices while the old North Main school site is repurposed, and the historic building will gain expanded space.
Notice from Mayor Melvin Ritter stating Section 6418 prohibits malicious destruction including opening fire hydrants with penalties of a $500 fine and 30 days in jail and that the section will be strictly enforced.
The annual meeting of Rittman Chamber of Commerce members will be on Thursday November 3 at the American Legion Hall banquet at 6 30 pm Harold B Rich president announced The Legion Auxiliary will serve the dinner Kenneth W Osborne chairs the meeting committee Others on the committee include Braham Hagey Harold Rich Marvin Bauman C E Rhonemus Dr Herbert Yabroff Russell W Frey John Winkler Ralph Overholt and more members are helping arrange the event
Kent State University students from a Community Newspaper class visited the Press plant for an inspection tour. Led by Prof. Raddick, they observed operations in the mechanical department, with explanations from Foreman Ivan Day, Pressman Bob Simonton, and Linotype Operator Russell Rodenberg.
Sherman S. Dalbey of Wooster joins C. E. Rhonemus as new associate, after swearing in and pending Cincinnati degree. Council overhauls village building code to require permits for sidewalk work and ensures repairs. Ohio Public Service Co. ten year contract approved with street lighting and utility use provisions.
National Fire Prevention Week activities focused on inspecting homes for hazards and conducting school drills. Fire Chief Winkler said drills in public schools were satisfactory. Students received prevention booklets to study at home with parents and were guided to inspect homes using a safety checklist.
Rev John Bates of Wooster College told Rotary club members at the First Evangelical L. B. church that Japan will advance faster than China and is already recovering from World War II effects. Introduced by Kenneth W Osborne, program committee member.
Six violators appeared before Mayor Melvin R Ritter this week and paid fines or donated to village funds. John Bellamy paid 10 dollars plus costs for disorderly conduct and received a 50 dollar peace bond. Oscar Bellamy paid the same on the same charge. Paul Harris and Way Hooser donated on intoxication charges. Harris paid 10 dollars and costs, Hooser 15 dollars and costs. Ervin Lancaster paid 15 dollars and costs for reckless driving. Paul McDowell paid 10 dollars and costs for passing a school bus.
Ohio Public Utilities Commission asked the local Phone Protest Committee about another hearing on poor service from Ohio Central Telephone Company. Paul E. Weiland called Ralph J Krabill to arrange a meeting next Tuesday to consider the request. The committee protests Aug 2 hearing conduct and may pursue concurrent action with Van Wert mayor L L Morris and others praising the group’s stand.
Residents audit local stop signs after a radio report on a neighboring case where an acquittal hinged on six inch letters. Investigators from Rittman confirm several signs do not meet the six inch requirement and a town solicitor has been alerted for action.
