Memorial Day observance lines up a Sunday program including a parade from South Main to the high school, memorial services at the high school, and a flag-raising at the public square. Veterans and citizens urged to attend in uniform if possible and ex service members asked to report for duty at 7:30 am.
Rittman Rotary welcomed Rotarian Russell Harp of Wadsworth for a Thursday noon talk on Rotary values from manufacturer to consumer. Visitors Byron Stevens and John Baldwin attended the luncheon.
A brief homage calling readers to honor those who in earlier years gave freely to uphold the flag and keep the nation’s ideals true and inviolate, celebrating their sacrifice and steadfast service.
Mayor Bender and Marshal Mills warn dog owners to keep dogs, with or without tags, from running at large in the park. The dog ordinance will be enforced and offenders will have dogs disposed of. Squirrels in the park were killed by dogs, underscoring the need to protect the animals placed to enhance park appeal.
At a May 25 meeting the board voted to gauge pupil interest in a summer school opening around June 15 for six weeks. Students may take up to two subjects, earning one summer credit unit. A follow up meeting is set for May 31 at 9 AM at the high school to organize courses, and interested students should attend or send a representative.
A countywide movement gathers delegates from all Wayne County Sunday schools for a conference at Orrville Methodist Church on Saturday May 29. Organized by the Ohio Council of Religious Education, events include 1 pm registration, talks and roundtable discussions, outdoor recreation, and a 6 pm banquet with songs and talks to promote youth leadership in churches and Sunday schools.
The American Legion auxiliary women conducted their annual sale of poppies last Friday and Saturday. The response to the cry buy a poppy was very gratifying. This worthy cause usually nets the ladies a neat sum.
Wm H XKelfling, 56, prominent Creston resident, died Friday at 6 pm at his Coulter street home after a recent illness of influenza and complications. He was formerly a large vegetable grower and a market supplier at Rittman, building extensive local ties through his business.
Mer Gofflner at the Pastime notes Sunday showings draw a capacity crowd but risk arrest under the law. He says he cannot afford to run Sunday films without public support and intends to close the theater after July 3, despite broad weekday approval.
The 10 day sale of lots in the J H Fisher addition ended with high satisfaction among buyers. Summerville Beers Granslet McConachie Sales Agency reported no dissatisfied customers and noted a memorable moment when a tot received a prize on Monday evening. A concrete bridge is now under construction across the creek at Industrial Street.
John Branigan Sr of Sharon Center Ohio died at home Wednesday at about 0 o clock at age 76. He was the father of John and Eugene Branigan and death was from heart trouble and drops. Funeral is Friday at 2 pm with burial in Sharon Center Cemetery.
J B Lambert asks to correct a report stating he signed an affidavit for the arrest of the local playhouse manager for showing on Sunday He denies signing any such document but admits attending the picture show last Sunday night as an organization representative.
The annual Lancetown school reunion will be held on Wednesday June 9 at the school house. Secretary urges turnout and notes plans for a memorable event.
Mr Stanley Teachout director of music leaves for Chitéie on Monday to join a chautauqua circuit for the summer. He will return next fall to resume his role as musical director for Rittman and Curoston schools.
The monthly cow sale will be held at the usual place this Friday starting at 1 30 p m. Besides high grade cows, two Ford touring cars two Ford coupes and some harness will be placed on sale.
R. W. Fredrick, wife and two children left in a Ford sedan for Denver. The well loaded car carried two beds a 9x12 tent a miniature refrigerator and ample provisions. They plan to travel via Indianapolis St Louis and Kansas City returning after duty. R. V. will attend the Rotary convention June 14 18 in Denver and visit relatives along the way.
Merchants will close their places of business on Monday in observance of Memorial Day this year. The note indicates a Sunday holiday shift causing closures across districts as communities mark the federal occasion.
