A local boy nicknamed Ken removed a gasoline cap from his parents’ new power mower and later replaced fuel with sand, keeping the family busy trying to start the machine. Various local notices list births, hospital visits, graduations, anniversaries, and community events involving residents of Rittman and nearby areas.
Fire Chief Lawrence Cline said the Owen Drake residence on Rufencrext sustained $2500 in damage from a Tuesday evening May 18 fire caused by faulty electrical wiring.
The Rittman City Council in regular session approved buying a J J Turner Inc box spreader from Cleveland for 2600 to speed street repairs. It can treat a 24 foot wide lane in one hour, guiding future use over chip and seal.
Thomas Wetzel of Ohio Edison will speak at Memorial Day Services. Walter Keating will marshal the parade at 10 30 am from Ene Street to the square, with the Rittman High School Band and groups including American Legion Auxiliary VFW Boy Scouts Girl Scouts Chippewa Sun Downers and H Saddle clubs. Carl Bradford to MC the Memorial Service at Rittman Cemetery at 11 am. Private Robert S Browning, 23, son of Mrs John M Browning, recently completed eight weeks at Campbell Ky basic training and is a 1970 Akron graduate with a BA, formerly a rate clerk for Morson Motor Freight.
A high school awards banquet on May 18 recognized top seniors and underclassmen. Danforth Award recipients were Sue Hensley and Ron Tisher, Debra Jackson earned multiple honors, and Myra Wright received the Outstanding Leader trophy. Numerous student council members and library aides were cited, with special pins and district and state placings highlighted for many students.
Alton L Ebert 80 of 175 N First St retired Rittman businessman died Wednesday at Wooster Community Hospital after two weeks illness. Born August 14 1890 in Apple Creek Wayne County he built Ebert Funeral Home in 1912 and operated 36 years. He owned Ebert Appliance Center later Stiner Service Center and was a leading GE dealer. He sold his piano and organ business in 1970. A Milton United Presbyterian member for 56 years and charter member of Rittman Rotary, he received a 50 year pin from Carl W. Ellenwood Lodge 715 F and A M. Survived by wife Lillian Stanley whom he married in 1915 a brother Horatio and nieces and nephews. Services May 22 at Milton United Presbyterian Church. Burial Wooster Cemetery. Gillman Funeral Home in charge.
George Walker 77 of 239 South Main St died May 22 at home after a long illness. Born in Wayne County West Virginia he lived there until moving to Rittman two years ago. A retired farmer and coal miner he was a member of Genoa West Virginia Baptist Church. Surviving are wife Isabell four sons Frank of Rittman Herbert of Brunswick Albert of Huntington West Virginia and Libbie of Dalton Georgia three daughters Opal Blevins Cleveland Amanda Hampton Tampa and Kathryn Sparks Rittman a brother Albert two sisters Belle Lane and Polly Spaulding all in West Virginia 24 grandchildren and three great grandchildren Services and burial were by Morris Funeral Home Wayne West Virginia Gillman Funeral Home handled local arrangements.
Rittman city offices will be closed all day Monday May 31 in observance of Memorial Day. Community services and administrative operations paused while staff observe the federal holiday. Local residents are advised to plan transactions accordingly and note temporary service gaps.
Rittman High School to hold its 76th annual commencement Sunday May 30 1971 at 8 pm on the high school football field Baccalaureate is Sunday at 2 pm in case of bad weather activities move to Middle School Gym Rev Wade Brakeway speaks at the baccalaureate topic The Graduate's Dilemma Other speakers include Rev Daniel Remaley Rev Fr Clarence Leiderbach Rev Robert A Russell Rev William McComas and Rev James Watt Rep John M Ashbrook will deliver the commencement address Remarks include class president and board of education diploma presentations with 1971 officers and sponsors named Fourteen seniors are National Honor Society members including Marjorie Adams Dennis Banders and Ronald Tisher.
Heber J Hunt of 222 Sterling Ave was among 31 Ohio Edison employees honored at the Massillon Division annual service awards banquet on May 20. Heber, with the company for 30 years, received a 14 karat solid gold pin with rubies.
The Wadsworth Rittman Hospital Auxiliary will hold an auction at the Wadsworth Masonic Temple on North High Street in Wadsworth on Saturday June 5 at 10 am. Proceeds fund a heart monitor for the hospital. Citizens may contribute items or attend to support. Sally Morrison at 334 1996 is the contact for item donations. Lunch will be available.
