Crowell Named Boxboard Sales Manager in Ohio Co

A. L. Crowell was appointed sales manager of the Ohio Boxboard Co on May 24 succeeding F S Wakeman. Crowell previously led carton and container sales for seven years at the firm and earlier worked five years with Robert Gair Co. He and his family reside in Wadsworth. Wakeman departs after seven years as vice president in charge of sales. M E Barthen will lead the carton and container division in Pittsburgh.

Park Pavilions Reserved for 27 Groups in Central Park

Central Park will host reserved pavilions for 27 groups from June to September. June events include Dressler, Fixler, and American Legion Auxiliary reunions, with numerous picnics and reunions scheduled through September.

Democrats elect committee officers in Wayne County

Adrian Miller an attorney from Wooster was chosen chairman of the Wayne County Democratic committee Tuesday night in the common pleas courtroom meeting. Ward Ramseyer of Smithville was named vice chairman Harold of Orrville elected secretary and Katherine L Gordon of Wooster the treasurer with all officers serving terms.

Youths Join Navy Training At Great Lakes

Three teens recently joined the Navy after passing 17 and report to Great Lakes for boot and boat training. The inductees are Robert Skelly of West Street, Duane Zimmerman of North State Street, and Dick Rupp of South Second Street. Skelly is listed under USNTS, lb. 1124 at Great Lakes.

Postwar Planning Aided By Council

Mayor Baldwyn reported cooperation with the Wayne County postwar planning commission to determine local employment needs. A brief card questionnaire will be sent within a week requesting three items of information to aid postwar planning after the war ends. The Marion Reserve Power Co. proposed refund of 3000 dollars annually on street lighting bills. Fourth Street grading was approved and most street oiling funds collected.

Poppy Day Observed Friday and Saturday

Poppy Day will be observed Friday and Saturday with the Girl Scouts aiding the American Legion Auxiliary in a house to house canvass. Mrs W W Bodager is local Poppy chairman with Mrs T G Galehouse as co chairman. Wearing the red flower supports living World War I and II victims.

Two Former Boxboard Men Killed In War Across Sides Of World

Two Ohio Boxboard Co former employees have died in military service. Pvt Carl Schoeppner, who worked in Canton before draft in 1942, was killed March 16 in the Admiralty Islands, leaving Nova his wife and eleven surviving relatives. Pvt Frank King, in an engineering corps, was killed March 26 in Italy. King, a Creston native, leaves two brothers and a sister. he was drafted in December 1942.

Grandview hunter shoots record horned owl

C. E. Wilson of Grandview near Ly shot a giant horned owl in the swamp southeast of town. The owl’s wing span measured 56 1/2 inches, near a national record. Wilson eyes two more owls robbing duck nests and offers $5 for one. Also listed are property transfers in Wooster and Milton Township with prices.

Memorial Day Honor Roll of 672 In The Service

The list honors 672 service members and includes many names such as Adams, Adame, Allison, Armstrong, Belcher, Bell, Brown, Campbell, and many more. It marks Memorial Day 1944 with casualties and distinctions noted for those in North Africa, Salerno, Italy, and Pacific theaters. The roll also includes a section of honored discharges and women in service across various branches.

Boy Scouts Sponsor Concert To Support Two Troops

Rittman Troops 405 and 410 plan a June 23 8 pm concert in the high school auditorium by the Akron Area Boy Scout band to raise about 400 dollars after Community Chest cuts. Tickets cost 50 and 25 cents with patrons tickets offered for several dollars. J C Hiestand will guest conduct the band, drawing Rittman youths into the Scout band for summer shows.

Willow Brook Opens Office for Applicants

The Federal Public Housing Authority will open a temporary office in the W B Gibson Co offices on Grand View on Monday June 8 to receive Willow Brook project housing applications. Mrs Marguerite Hugman, Medina project manager, will supervise the initial process.

Births and a death in Medina area families

A son born to Mr and Mrs Leonard McElhaney at Sterling on May 20. A son born to Mr and Mrs Warner McCarthy of South Main street on May 23 at Wadsworth hospital. Mrs McCarthy had an appendectomy five days earlier. A daughter born to Mr and Mrs Joe Sohar of Rittman R D on May 20 at Wadsworth hospital. A daughter born to Mr and Mrs Harold Booth on May 23 at Wadsworth hospital. A son born to Mr and Mrs Paul Erich of South Main street at home on May 25. Mrs Lorenz Johnson of North State street is one of three sisters surviving Mrs Florence Eaken Martin who died at Cleveland City Hospital last Wednesday of a cerebral hemorrhage. Services were held Saturday and burial was in Grove cemetery.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p m at Zbect Funeral Home for Frank Floyd Webner 58 who died by his own hand with a .22 rifle in his Grant street home He had worked 26 years at Ohid Salt Co and recently retired after a heart attack In July He is survived by wife Cees Trude daughter Ruth son Dale and Frank Jr an Army Air Corps officer now in Louisiana The body will lie in state Friday evening at the funeral home The funeral includes private rites with Rev W F Echols and av Davidson In charge Burial will be in Rittman cemetery The date marks the anniversary of an accident that cost Mr Webner an arm in Boyhood Born in Smithville August 1888 he began at Ohio Salt in 1916 and married Guidide Trent in 1918

Rittman Softball League Opens Season June First

The newly formed Rittman Softball League announced its season kickoff for Thursday, June 1 at 4 pm at the recreation field in Ohio Ave. President W. F. Echols said over 140 boys aged 12 to 18 have joined eight teams funded by local clubs, churches, and businesses. An exhibition is planned at 7 pm, with youth under 13 eligible if a local group volunteers supervision. Competitive play starts Monday with 12-14 year olds at 4 pm and high school boys at 7 pm.

Elsass sells the Ben Franklin Store occupying two rooms on the east side of the Square to KH Davidson of Springfield. Butter Bros. wholesale sponsors the stores. The prior owner Ed Elsass and manager Mr Elsass will remain connected during inventory take. The move follows Elsass relocating to manage the Wadsworth store. the Elsass family has merged public service roles and civic activity continues.

Lions Start Cub Scout Program for Boys in Akron

The Lions club will sponsor a Boy Scout cub program with Weldon Hardgrove as cubmaster. A meeting is called for parents of boys aged 9 to 12 at City Hall on Wednesday evening May 31 with Akron district representatives and J C Whitlam of Wadsworth to explain how they locate 55 boys in the area.
