New Route 57 project eyed for Rittman area
Rittman city council learned that a July 31 opening is planned for the new Route 57 corridor from Route 30 to Lorain with four miles of stretch south and east of Rittman. Construction could start in 1969 pending funds and a possible highway workers strike.

Carolyn McCloud and David McSpadden received the Danforth Award for scholarship citizenship and character. State and district scholarship placings included Fred Fetzer Karen Burkhart and Jerry Bauman with honorable mentions and district contest placements for Alan Nolt Dan Winkler and Dave McSpadden.

Memorial Day parade honors soldiers at Rittman cemeteries
A Memorial Day observance in Rittman will begin at 8 am with a visit to seven outlying cemeteries including Pioneer and Apostolic. Flags will be placed Sunday by American Legion members. A parade at 10:30 am will feature the Ritttman High School band, scouts, veterans groups and local officials, ending at Rittman Cemetery for an 11:30 am ceremony headlined by Col. Luther R. Miller.

Rittman High School band will present a 45 minute Memorial Day concert in the park Tuesday at 7 p.m. Directed by Dennis Antram the light pop program features 75 members including upcoming eighth graders. Selections include Carousel Fiddler on the Roof and Sousa marches.

Rittman merchants sponsor a 10 week drawing to send ten families on weekend vacations at Albert Pick Motel properties. Thirty one stores host registration starting Wednesday with weekly random picks each Saturday. Robert Mathys 40 Buried in Rittman
Services were held Tuesday at First Baptist Church for Robert L Mathys 40 of 30 South Second. He died Saturday after a four day illness at Orrville Osteopathic Hospital. He was a packaging firm machine operator and World War II veteran. He lived in Seville and later moved to Rittman. Surviving include wife Edna Cyrus Mathys children and extended family. Burial was at Rittman Cemetery. Gillman Funeral Home handled arrangements.
