Connie Smoot, daughter of Mr and Mrs Tom Smoot of 120 North Third, is notified of acceptance for the Summer quarter at Ohio State University. She will begin studies June 18. The column also notes nearby births hospital stays and local birthdays with multiple names and dates.
An open house campout at American Legion grounds planned by Boy Scout Troop 405 has been postponed due to a clash in dates for ground use. The new date will be announced.
Rittman Board of Education hired five teachers including head football coach John R. Wachtel of Warren with eight years experience plus service in the military. Also named were Joseph Briese as assistant football coach and math instructor, William D. Miller of Akron for junior high, Kathleen Steele for middle grades, and Thomas Cranston for junior high math and English. resignations accepted include high school English instructor Robert Bossa and West Hill second grade instructor Virginia Jennings. The district seeks two rooms for fall classes and awaits state approval for half day sessions.
Christine Williams daughter of Mr and Mrs Lindsey Williams of Pinewood Lane invites the public to an open house Thursday at 7 30 pm. She will return from Apostoles Argentina where she studied under a Rotary Exchange plan. Guests Christina Scotto and Angela Scotto, hosted by the Williams family, were part of a reception postponed due to Christine’s hospitalization in Beunos Aires for a finger infection.
Friendly Mothers Club members will meet Tuesday May 28 at 6 30 pm in the Rittman Savings Bank Social Room. Bring own table service for a potluck supper. Mrs Frank Bostancic will present a program on Flower Arranging. Hostesses are Mrs Ronald Stiele Mrs Dale Widmer and Mrs William Khapic.
The Rev. Thurman H Tobias of Kent will speak at Rittman Cemetery during special Memorial Day services after the parade. The observance includes multiple cemeteries, with Walter Keating and Ivan Frase organizing, and Sgt Robert Steiner leading the firing squad.
Rittman High School honored its top scholars and Danforth Award recipients at Recognition Day ceremonies. Danforth Award winners Joyce Beery and Bruce Dean were praised for scholarship, citizenship, and school participation while district and state scholarship contestants excelled in Latin, Spanish, English, and science.
RP Editor Fran Sandrock won three first place awards at an Ohio Press Women event in Akron for Weekly Newspapers under 20,000 circulation. She also earned two second place and one third place for pieces in the Rittman Press including a city council story on Front Street Pond and a feature on a Rittman boy entering the U S Army.
The Chippewa Township Fire Department holds a firemen auction this Saturday at 6:20 near Old Route 94 on County Road 70. Items include household appliances goods and land equipment plus small items. Auctioneer Paul Marts. Lunch and refreshments served. Clerk Wilford Blatter.
A recognition program for junior high students will be held Wednesday June 5 at 10 am in the high school gym. Eighth graders will receive awards for science fair achievement perfect attendance spelling and honor roll. Diplomas will be presented by the superintendent and board member. Following the program a picnic will be held at City Park.
Rittman High School seniors prepare for a Sunday June 2 baccalaureate service at the school. Pastor WK McComas of Calvary Baptist Church will deliver the address. The concert choir will perform under Mrs Carolyn Warren with pieces by Willan Thomson and Lutkin. Robert W Brownson of Ashland College will give the commencement speech four days later.
At the annual Rittman High School band banquet at Williams Restaurant Band Director Dennis Antram announced John Philip Sousa and Arion Award winners. Joyce Beery received the Sousa award for outstanding achievement in instrumental music while Gay Griner earned the Arion award for outstanding musical achievement.
Rittman High School Student Council and FNA sponsor a Sunday dance at the American Legion Hall from 2 to 5 pm on May 26. Admission is $1.00. The Royal Chessman will perform. Proceeds fund student council president Myron Weber’s Texas workshop attendance.
Car Wash by Milton United Presbyterian Church will be held Saturday May 25 from 8 a.m. to ? p.m. at the church. For pickup and delivery contact Bruce Breece David Broadhurst or Mary Melentac ker.
