Fritg Pedie and party traveled to Akron when Pedie’s Ford touring car had its battery stolen from the parked vehicle. The thief removed the battery and left beneath the car boards displaced, eluding police with no trace found at the time of reporting.
The Reptyman Orchards Co reports a large new orchard near Rittman with extensive planting of peach and apple trees under supervision of experienced horticulturist F W Hickin. The operation promises significant future fruit production and local employment as the orchard comes into bearing.
The joint sale of J T Johnson and Otto Klay at the Johnson residence last Saturday afternoon drew a good crowd and lively bidding. Both parties sold their properties. Mr Klay plans to motor West while Mr Johnson will remain in Rittman for the immediate future.
On Mothers Day Mr and Mrs W E Hetks hosted a family dinner for eleven. Attending were Mr and Mrs J B Hieckin and their sons Robert and Justin, Mr and Mrs Israel Hetks and daughter Gladys, and host Charles Ward and daughter Betty.
Wayne County Red Cross executive secretary Miss Robberson urges service members to secure all government benefits including Liberty Bonds and disability compensation. She notes delays since discharge and offers assistance with applications, with the Worcester post office address and hours listed.
Work is progressing steadily on the dwelling being built by Marvin Wenger on Thirds. The home is well arranged and it is rumored Matt is building this fine home for the young man who recently arrived and has since taken over the reigns. Matt says not every home is good enough for that boy.
After September 11 Civil War and Spanish-American War veterans will receive monthly pensions instead of quarterly. The Morgan bill before Congress adds 22 dollars monthly for disabled veterans needing aid, raises Civil War widow pensions from 30 to 50 dollars, and grants that widows married before 1910 are eligible for the higher pay.
Kittman was represented by H E Heirs A L Ebert and J J Wein at the Ohio State Automobile Club convention in Columbus. Delegates noted the club size grants three representatives and praised the club’s role in road improvements, while hopeful about future achievements.
The WB A's held a Tuesday evening social and bazaar in K of P hall. A short program and vaudeville stunt followed by games provided entertainment and a neat sum was raised for the club funds.
Last Thursday about 20 club members and their wives attended a dinner at Louie Youngs on the lakes. The event, staged by the club's entertainment committee, was a social success though turnout fell short of the club's size. After dinner, attendees enjoyed the dance hall and a lively evening, signaling the club's active role in Rittman civic and social life.
Last Thursday a license to marry was granted to Mr Edward Zuercher and Mrs Moe Zuercher both of this place. The ceremony was performed by Rev Chas Fo Fredman of the United Boe church. The couple will reside in Rittman in the bride’s home.
A milk price war grips Cleveland with stores selling milk as low as 8 cents a quart. Distributors led by Telling Helle Vernon Cu slash prices, claiming new low costs and carry prices benefit consumers during the conflict.
Harry Ruckel of Sharon Center purchased Spade's Grocery and is now in full possession of stock and goodwill. He recently acquainted himself with the store and trade and is described as a hustler and wide awake businessman.
Elmer Spear of Rittman has lived in the area for years and expects to drive to California next Tuesday. He built a custom home on a speed wagon chassis with running water, a bathroom, electric lights, folding beds and chairs. The trip should cover the distance by auto and may take until early tally.
At the Ohio Salt Co factory in Rittman two workers named Steve Kolak and Steve Laasich were hurt at work last week. Kolak stepped on a nail while assisting in building a new tipple, and Laasich was struck while removing heavy machinery. Both received medical attention and were not severely injured.
Chippewa Grange sends early greetings as twenty eight to thirty members attend the meeting. EB L. Dulabahm now Worthy Master of Doylestown Grange attends. Discussion covers Wooster conference, hall rent, and plans for future joint visits among Wayne County Granges.
A crowded high school auditorium welcomed the globe trotters in Touring the World with Uncle Sam, a play by 4th 5th and 6th graders. America led the tour with cos play costumes reflecting many nations. Miss Marjorie Stoolmiller presided the program and teachers and parents earned praise for labor and box office receipts.
Supt. Carroll Reed of Akron will deliver the commencement address at Akron Public Schools. The May 26 event is highlighted after last week’s mention of the visiting educator.
The local K of P lodge hosted a large fish fry Monday evening. Members and guests attended, complimenting Chef Guise on the meal. Reportedly the fish was tasty with coffee and bread served to all attendees.
The Ohio Roxboard lost its opening game to the Ohio Match-Injector Athletic Association of Wadaworth. A large crowd watched as Roxboard led late before fading, while Sox pitched well but lacked support. Two-base hits came from Raff Stocker J Buckingham, with several stolen bases and pitching figures noted for Sox Caskey Clark and others.
Mr and Mrs Otto Klay begin a cross country auto trip from Rittman Ohio with planned stops in Bluffton Indiana and Iowa to visit relatives. They will later reach Woodland California to establish residence. Mrs Klay grew up in Rittman and friends here regret their move westward.
Albert Hartzler died at his home four miles northwest of the city after sustaining a fractured skull when he fell from a ladder while his son Ellis helped remove bird nests from the spouting. He died Saturday morning, four miles away from injuries suffered Thursday morning. The Courier-Crescent reports the fatal fall.
