Warnings and wry notes mix satire and social tidbits from a 1920s column. References range from rhinoceros costs to weather in York and fish in Honduras, with jokes about prohibition, gun silencers, poppies, and politics.
A new monthly four page Westwind paper will appear near Rittman for summer months. The paper lists Eagle Scouts from Akron areas including Donald Sherwood Harold Me Giants Frank Hallet Richard Dern Howard Kautz Jerry Rex ter and Audra L Shook with coverage from Wadsworth Troop 404 and Troops 15 17 302.
A and P Store manager Eddie Woyatt was taken to Wadsworth hospital after falling seriously ill on Wednesday. He underwent surgery for appendicitis according to reports from the store.
Memorial services for our honored dead will be held in the High School auditorium Friday May 20 at 11 o clock conducted by the American Legion. The Legion will decorate graves and the Memorial Day parade led by Wadsworth Drum and Bugle Corps will form at the parade start. Turk Turley of Wadsworth will speak. Turley is pastor of the Christian Church of Wadsworth. Local groups are urged to attend and show proper tribute.
The Acme Stores annual gathering at Axton Armory drew about 1500 employees and spouses for an evening of entertainment and a buffet. Fred W. Albrecht led the program with his son Hi. J. Albrecht assisting. Several staff received long service pins, including Walter Buell with 25 years and William Boss with 20 years, along with other 15 to 16 year honorees across Acme No. 1, the warehouse, and Akron area locations.
Wooster College plans Color Day pageant on Saturday May 17 at Severance Stadium. Miss Kathleen Lowrie directs the event with Miss Myrtle Ross assisting. The play The Story of Melody will be staged with about 250 participants beginning at 3 o clock a.m.
Mrs Ji D Nevelle died Friday in Wadsworth after a heart trouble at the age of 43. She is survived by her husband and five children Jack Adrian Glen Francis Dorothy Pauline and James. She was well known in Rittman and attended many social functions. Her husband formerly held a position at Ohio Boxboard Co. The Nevelles moved to Wadsworth two years ago. The body was taken to Middleport for burial Sunday.
Work will begin soon on a 1700 foot paving project linking the south end with Stars on Route 94. Holmes Construction Co of Wooster won the bid at 76 260 dollars for concrete bridge work. Actual start is pending state approval of widening No 94 and 36 intersection, secured by the Rittman Automobile Club.
Miss Mary Pavlic, a top Rittman pupil, traveled to Springfield Ohio last Saturday to sit for a chemistry exam as part of a scholarship effort to Wittenberg College. She earned a senior county contest award and received a certificate at Columbus with her companions Mrs Willard Spade Esther Spade and Superintendent V A Garver.
The Press begins a new serial by Ilaabeth Jordan titled Misa Nobody from Nowhere. The first installment on page two promises a supreme narration with a mystifying atmosphere and a gripping romance through imagination as readers enter the unfolding mystery.
The A.FL. Thomas Trexall Store sponsored contest ran March 1 to last week with a $26 prize. Freshmen narrowly led Juniors by 51 votes at the final count after a close near finish. To celebrate, the winning class held a party Monday evening at the Pete Heu side venue on the Sterling road.
Principal R W McNury of the first Syreat Widding school was surprised Friday by teachers and supervisors in a celebration in the Hone Economic room. Myra McNary and daughter attended. The event marked the climax of his work in the profession as he renews ministerial relations and prepares for admission into the Northeast Ohio conference this fall. He and his family will visit relatives in Indiana before returning.
Wadsworth emerges as a city with 6 015 residents, up 1 178 from 1920 a 24 percent gain. Rittman also expands from 1 803 in 1920 to 2 789, a 54 percent rise, outpacing nearby towns in the region.
The Patrons express thanks to the Board of Education for their interest and kindness in purchasing a piano for the school.
Esther Spade earned a certificate at Columbus last Saturday for second highest English grade in the state among 86. She led Wayne County and the Northeast Conference standings and ranks high scholastically. She plans to enter college in the fall, college undecided.
Boxing fans in Stittman Wadsworth and nearby towns await the main event between Frank Kitts and Al Reed, two Rittman heavyweight pros. The bout, billed as a natural clash with local color, is planned for May 3 at the Ohio Match Company gym in Wadsworth, promoted by Sid Allen.
Frank Harter purchases a new Hudson car model CGyeater 8, driven by F. E. Harter. The sale was arranged by A. A. Blatt of Sterling who has sold 17 Hudsons since January first, highlighting a strong sales record.
The D. of A. lodge met Thursday May 8 with 14 members present Deput y Mrs Buxton and two visitors from Akron attended Next meeting set for May 22 to nominate officers and finalize plans for the upcoming term.
Zora Pleigh Keating, 30, wife of Walter Keating, died four days after pneumonia complications. She was a daughter of Arthy and Ida Plough, longtime resident, Church of God member, and former 1920 graduate. Funeral services were held at her mother’s home and Knappa church with about 400 attendees. Burial was at Ketipp's cemetery beside her father. She leaves her husband and three children, Vernon, Dolores, and Erma May, and one brother Willard Plough.
