Ruffles the dog remembered in fire aftermath

A long, sprawling town column recalls Ruffles the puppy lost in a South Street fire. Found later by the Brooks family, the dog survived a day amid flames and a night in a burned building, was cared for, and then disappeared again before being placed at Wayne County dog pound.

Songsters Concert Friday At Rittman High School

The Songsters deliver a spring concert at Rittman High School Friday at 8 p.m. under Mrs. Carolyn Warren. The program features the concert choir, small vocal groups, two soloists, and top state contest performers including Choralettes and the prep choir opening with The Bells of St Mary’s. Nancy Emeh accompanies.

Farlow elected R E A president for coming year

John Farlow of the Rittman Education Association is named president for the year. Marvin Hummel becomes president elect, with Mrs. Jean Blankenship treasurer and Judy Burns secretary. They replace Dennis Antram, who serves this year.

Compulsory Pickup Favored in City Waste Plan

City officials discussed moving the old dump to a new site near Mennonite Road about 300 yards off Guilford. A compulsory curbside pickup with city billing residents via water and sewer was favored to lower costs, with bids from M. W. Jackson and Sanitation Services of Akron. A meeting with Columbus sanitary engineers will address questions and push final site approval. Pastor James Watt lauded the Clean Up campaign as 90 truckloads were hauled away in two weeks. First reading of an ordinance would accept Pioneer Mutual Cemetery Association assets for maintenance.

Dedicate Post To Sgt Armentrout At American Legion Hall

Newly organized Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1610 plans a dedication for Sgt Stanley William Armentrout at 3 30 p m Saturday at the American Legion Hall. The public is invited. He died in Vietnam on Nov 16 1968 and was born Sept 13 1948 in Darbin WV. The post commander is James Paulos with 70 members and officers named.

Superior Band to Present Annual Spring Concert Saturday

Junior High and Rittman High School bands join for a 120 plus member program at 7:30 p.m. at the high school. Band Director Dennis Antram leads. Open with Meseta Paso Doble, then Overature to L Amant Jaloux and more. High school pieces include Mustang Concert March and Scenes from The Louvre. Karen Smoot solo on Clarinet. US Field Artillery March closes.

Completion of Wayne County Joint Vocational School by July

The Wayne County Joint Vocational School is slated for completion by the end of July despite prior delays from electrician and plumbing shortages and an initial steel shortage. Painting and tiling are underway. 51 students from Rittman and 70 from Chippewa are set to enroll in September with bus transport across 10 districts. A cafeteria manager, Mrs. Pauline Kreider, was hired at $3200 with an Aug 18 start date.
