May Day program at Rittman High School features a queen selection and a musical program titled An American Scene. Five contestants with escorts await the queen's name, to be crowned by Myrtle Krahenbuhl, last year’s queen, as the concert closes with dances after crowning. The Belle Drumline Band and Chorales perform American themed pieces, including Manhattan Vignettes and Oklahoma.
Vogt Ivers Associates will begin a comprehensive planning survey for Rittman within the week after city approval. City Manager Charles Mann announced federal grant approval from the Housing and Home Finance Agency via Robert M Collison, with state authorization needed before contracting. Mann said the project may exceed the initial 5180 estimate and that two thirds of expenses come from the government, with an original survey estimate of 11200.
Police Chief Merle Heffelman returned Thursday from a two day course at Ohio State University on Planning Function in Law Enforcement. The course aimed to determine optimal patrol hours and daily coverage for the community. Heffelman said it was among the best schools he has attended and will aid in planning the local policing program.
Ray E Semmler district manager of Ohio Edison in Rittman will become general supervisor of commercial sales effective May 16 announced by president W H Sammis Semmler has 23 years with the company including service in World War II and the Korean era He is a native of Marshall Missouri and Alliance Ohio and has held multiple commercial and community posts in Marion Alliance and Rittman family plans to move to Akron
Rittman School system considered on again consolidation by Board of Education. Norbert Reffert noted possible future need and committee review scheduled for Monday evening in the high school home economics room. Superintendent Hauenstein urged proceeding with a building needs survey.
Delta Club hosts a May exhibit at Rittman Public Library drawing 30 exhibitors. Oils pastels watercolors and drawings are on display until Saturday May 12 at 5 PM. Notable signatures include Emma Houg lan Laura Jean Frye Wanda Fawcett and Betty Stulwagner among others.
Funeral services were held at Milton Presbyterian Church for K Raymond Lance 32 of 130 South Metzger who died Sunday night at Wadsworth Municipal Hospital after a heart attack. He was a Packaging Corporation of America supervisor and active in the Rittman community as a deacon and Junior Achievement advisor. He is survived by his wife Joan Ralph Lance two sons James Edward and Jonathan Raymond two daughters Peggy Jo and Laurie Ellen his parents Kenneth and Mrs Kenneth Lance a brother and two sisters. Rev James Watt officiated and burial took place at Rittman Cemetery.
Rittman Junior Achievement will hold its sixth annual Future Unlimited Banquet at 6 30 p m on Wednesday May 16 at American Legion Hall. The Best Company award and individual achiever honors will be presented. Speaker will be William Rabhi.
In a rare light turnout of 630 voters on Tuesday Rittman locals backed Myron Steiner over Carl E Buchwalter for the Republican nomination for Commissioner by 224 to 10 in Rittman. Steiner faces Leland Musser in November after Musser won by 52 votes over Ernest Aylsworth in the county tally.
Rittman police force dwindles as Patrolman Duane Acker resigns effective immediately. City manager Charles Mann says two officers short after Charles Hall quit over a month ago. Mann expects to hire at least one new officer within the week to fill the gap.
A steering committee of area citizens will study plans for a new 100 bed hospital and coordinate with the hospital board. The committee, appointed by Mayors Sommer and Houglan, will review Dr. Louis Block’s survey and help arrange funds and equipment for the $2,300,000 project.
