From the ground they saw a machine fail and a boy fall. An ambulance race five miles through shelling saves him. A Red Cross man says a dollar or two paid for gasoline bandages and a timely trip home. The narrator wonders whose dollar it was.
A large crowd gathered for a patriotic rally in Rittman as the town celebrated the Liberty Loan effort. Judge Weygant spoke as workers erected a 75 foot pole carrying the U.S. flag and an honor flag while the parade and schoolchildren filled Main Street.
Flames swept Sterling early Monday destroying about half the town’s commerce. The Longsdorf building and adjacent structures burned with extensive losses to merchandise and insured goods. Fire officials cited an unknown blaze origin and sought to determine damages while local K P lodge discussed a two story brick block on the burned site.
The Rittman board of education voted to discontinue German in the public schools effective May 8. German had been offered only in the high school as an elective with seven students enrolled. The move aligns with a nationwide trend drawing public approval from local residents.
Wayne county grand jury at Wooster failed to indict Solon Prior of Sterling on possession of a bottle of nusk belonging to Alvin Blatt. Prior was arrested and his house searched weeks ago. Justice Smith bound him over. The panel also failed to indict Theodore Peterson the driller who stabbed a man named Jones near Rittman. witnesses said the fight was fair and Peterson acted in self defense.
Only two current teachers have accepted for next year in Rittman as Supt C V W Clouse declines re election. Most staff have declined renewal or left for other work, with Miss Blanche Hoover and Miss Sadie Boling the only incumbents staying on.
