Rittman leagues wrapped up the season with the B community league finishing Wednesday and the A league completing its games Thursday. A banquet for 24 teams and sponsors will be at Youngs Hotel on May 11 at 7 p.m. Clayton Kunkler announced the Press trophy will be awarded to the winning team.
About 350 attended the Thursday evening event in the high school auditorium. The show was well arranged and drew a hearty response from the audience. Prizes were awarded to numerous attendees including Mrs. Ray Palmer and several other local residents.
Herbert Andrews Ohio conservation officer screened colored reels at the Lions club meeting. The films Under Ohio Skies and Realm of the Wild depicted wildlife life in natural habitats. Clyde Ambrose introduced him. May 17 plans include a ladies night box social and tea dance. Two teams led by Emmet Griner and Harry Griner compete for attendance with a dinner prize for the winner.
Dennis J. Ryan of Rittman was arrested at the bus station in Worcester Monday by Sheriff E E Mills after leaving here without paying a board bill of about 50 dollars. He was returned here and his case was heard by Justice Bertha Sherrick with a fine of 100 dollars and costs imposed.
The Rittman Savings Bank reports a limited supply of new Ben Franklin half dollars for collectors and interested persons. The Liberty half dollar has circulated since 1916 and will continue to do so with no additional minting planned.
James Collier announced the sale of his grocery store on E Ohio Ave to Sidney Trogden formerly of Ohio Boxboard Co. Trogden takes over May 17 with his son Paul joining the business after graduating high school this year. They intend to maintain prior store policies.
The board of education met to hear Ronald Spahn confirm plans for a new school would be ready to bid by May 15 with bids opened June 15 and a decision by July 15. The board changed its meeting night to the first Tuesday monthly and announced summer rehabilitation work on school buildings with painting and repairs as finances permit.
School year activities announced by Supt. W H Hauenstein and approved by the board of education. Baccalaureate is Sunday May 23 at 8 pm in Dean auditorium with Rev Wert Dean speaking. Junior high commencement is Tuesday May 25 at 8 pm in the auditorium. Senior high commencement is Wednesday May 26 at 8 pm with Akron South high school principal Lewis Turner as main speaker. The senior Womens Missionary Council hosts the event at First Brethren Church on Tuesday May 11 at 6 30 p m. Miss Ruth Dawson a Cleveland social worker will speak and Mrs Iva Maine will preside.
The board finance committee met Wednesday night to discuss adjustments to the teacher salary schedule.
Voters in Rittman and Milton township largely followed county and state trends on election day. County winners included sheriff Glenn Rike and Martin Tyrrell, with Ralph Fisher for state representative and W A Garver for county treasurer. Lausche and Herbert led in state races. In Milton township precincts Republicans outnumbered Democrats by 255 to 200.
Rittman merchants plan a Bonus Night drawing starting next week with support from the Chamber of Commerce. Tickets cost 50 cents per purchase, with weekly Saturday drawings offering 50 dollars, 15 dollars, and 10 dollars in script redeemable at participating stores.
Wayne Rufener and Earl Fixler each won a pair of shoes in the store drawing at Rittman Department Store during a recent shoe sale.
