Perfect Spellers Receive Ribbons at Wayne County Contest

Sterling school held a Wayne County spelling contest last Friday with twenty seven pupils achieving perfect scores. Blue ribbons were awarded during the chapel program by Mr Linde camp. Legion News Highlights May Day Events And Meetings

Regular Howard AC Bair Post 423 meeting notes Rev. C J McGee named speaker for Memorial Day services at the local high school auditorium on Sunday May 29. Wayne County council to meet in Doylestown May 11. Tickets for The Last Squadron are now in Legionnaires hands and proceeds aid the post. May 11 and 12 feature show dates. National American Legion Executive Committee meetings May 5 and 6 at headquarters discuss legislation and disability compensation proposals. National commander Henry Stevens denounces proposed cuts as outrageous. The NEC acts as Legion governing body between conventions with eight department reps and past national commanders attending. Veterans Administration data show deaths at five per hour and 120 per day. 44,216 veterans in government hospital care end February with 27,402 in VA hospitals and 6,013 in VA Homes. 2,400 in contract or state institutions. breakdown shows 19,422 nervous, 7,644 tuberculosis, 16,996 general medical and surgical cases.

Juniors Seniors Banquet In Japan

The Juniors and Seniors plus high school faculty and wives were taken to a garden setting in Japan for a banquet. Sophomore girls served in pink and white cherry blossom decor while Japanese lanterns lit the scene. Gerald Spalding welcomed attendees and Helen Steiner replied, then guests traveled to Keith's Palace in Cleveland to see Carnival Boat.

Valley Ridge Opens Near Rittman For Summer Golf

Valley Ridge opens Saturday fifteen minutes from Rittman one mile south of Easton on Portage road. The course, under Riceland management with Mr Swain in charge, features a sporty lay out and unusual fairways. Long nine runs 3121 yards, short nine 3009. Inside remodeling adds a lounge and refreshments.

Brand and Talcott Wed in Cleveland Wedding

A marriage license was granted to Xavery Brand and Mrs. Talcott of Cleveland. They were recently married in Cleveland. Brand, well known in Rittman, has lived at Barbara Clippinger cosfdence and now plans to make their home on Liberty Street. The paper suggests renaming Liberty Street to Bridal Row due to several newlyweds nearby.

Pythian Ladies Host Mother-Daughter Banquet at Presbyterian Church

The Pythian Ladies of the Presbyterian church hosted a first of its kind mother-daughter banquet on Wednesday evening. The hall was filled, decor featured artificial blossoms and lanterns, and carnations were given as favors. A Girl Scout program followed dinner, with vocal selections and remarks from Miss Lucile Regio and Mrs Bradshaw. Jessie Willig Brockman, dean of women at Wooster College, delivered a talk urging daughters and mothers to uphold moral standards, while Mrs Marvin Wenger chaired and traced Mothers’ Day history to its Philadelphia origins.

Greek restaurant owner dies after nine years in city

The Akron Greek restaurant owner Hharsy Agallatads died Wednesday at age 57 after nine years in the United States. He came to the country from Greece with family, left a mother and sister, and ran a Salt Street restaurant. Services will be held at the Greek Orthodox church, with Albert in charge of the funeral arrangements.
