The council advanced the controversial anti-noise ordinance to a second reading after a three year debate and a prior 3-3 tie. If enacted it would replace current noise laws with tighter controls, with exceptions for outside music during Christmas and for school church and charitable events.
Local stores extend Friday and Saturday hours to 8:30 p m for a major promotion with door prizes. Shoppers can win $50 each Friday until Labor Day by presenting tickets earned with every dollar spent. A loud speaker truck will announce winners while the Rittman High School band adds to the event.
Lois Wright of Rittman was chosen Queen of Ohio Northern University's May Day celebration in Ada Ohio. The senior pharmacy major, a Tau Kappa Kappa member and charter Alpha Alpha Chapter member, will be crowned after a parade and a baseball game with Ashland College.
Residents face fines under a new clean up ordinance issued by Mayor O A Houglan. Property owners must clear lands yards vaults and sheds and ensure proper drainage by May 10. Chamber of Commerce clubs and others fund beautification of entrances and plant trees around the dump once land is filled.
An electrical storm caused a citywide power outage of about four minutes Monday night. Crews restored power by rerouting lines from Barberton as the system recovered.

Victor Shook son of Mr and Mrs Tracy Shook was seriously injured August 12 1957 when his car was demolished. He was moved to Akron City Hospital last Friday and will receive whirlpool therapy in room 32 to loosen taut muscles.
Eight year old Billy Shook son of Mr and Mrs Arnold Shook dislocated neck in a fall from a tree Wednesday at about four at his West Sunset Drive home. Grandmother Mrs Tracy Shook says injury extent undetermined. He was taken to Wadsworth Municipal polio clinic for treatment.
The Tri-County Guidance Center Drive in Rittman extends for several more days as volunteers aim to raise 1300 dollars toward a 9000 dollar Wayne County goal. Holmes and Medina counties also support the mental health effort with additional solicitors named.
Registration day for the Hot Stove League drew over 180 sign ups led by league president Ike Ramsier. Plans include 12 teams possible this summer if fields on E Ohio and a new ball diamond near West Hill are built, with further field at the swimming pool site contemplated.

The Ohio Fuel Gas Company proposed a substantial rate rise at a council utilities committee meeting on Tuesday. Officials said final figures will come at the May 12 council session and any hike requires council approval under the eight year contract expiring July 15.
The Rittman school board will hold its scheduled monthly meeting Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the North Street school building.
