County officials postponed classes as muddy roads halted bus service. Doylestown Smithville Shreve and Waynedale schools remained shut with Doylestown planning to reopen Monday.
A charter proposal is being mailed to Rittman residents and a school contest for the best statement on Why Rittman Needs Charter was announced. Open to fourth grade through high school students, entries due April 5 with prizes including a transistor radio and cameras.
The Rittman Charter Commission will hold an informational meeting at 7 30 p m Thursday April 7 in the Packaging Corporation of America conference room. Commissioners will answer questions about the proposed Charter delivered to residents this week and to be voted on at the May 3 special election. City Hall will provide copies for residents who did not receive one by mail.
Mrs. George Allenbaugh of Pinewood Avenue won first place in the Vogue sewing contest during the District Clubs Legislation meeting in Wooster on March 23. It was her second triumph.
Dorothy Athey files for divorce from Vernon Athey of Letonia after a 1936 marriage in West Virginia. She seeks custody of the two children, support, alimony, and an interest in real estate amid claims of neglect and cruelty.

Milton Township Trustees and Council debated a one mill fire protection levy over two years. Trustees Blatter Hoover and Leedy argued volunteers and funds, noting Rittman would share costs. council members urged taxpayer input and warned of tax rate impacts. Mayor Houglan closed with the voters decision.

A Sunday Erie tracks derailment near Sterling Avenue in Rittman left two freight cars off the rails and a third jammed. The draw bar dropped below ground level, causing a slowdown and derailment. wrecking crews from Kent cleared tracks by 7 p.m. and Sterling Avenue cross ing reopened Monday noon.
Frank Skraba of Rittman fights extradition to Ohio on charges of attempted burglary and shooting a police officer. A Michigan meeting with a governor’s representative is set for April 8 after a postponement. Skraba’s counsel delays further, while warrants and arrests in Detroit tie to an unlawful flight case and alleged robberies in Mogadore. Bail for Mrs Skraba and others related to aiding Skraba stands at 2000 and 11000 dollars respectively.
Council approves a May 2 1960 public hearing on changing 17 acres from R-1 to C-1 at the northern city limits near Home Street and North Main. It also renews Worcester mutual fire aid for three years and funds half of a new IBM electric typewriter for the Assistant Clerk.
Dr Burton W Gorman will address the Rittman PTA on April 7 at the high school auditorium. The program highlights upper grade work and preparation for college with a social hour at 7 30 p m and a business meeting at 8 p m under REA leadership.

Paul Emeh reports Imperial Plastics plans a plant on Industrial Street employing about five workers initially. Virgil Burnette started a Dairy Isle custard shop between Gables Ace Hi and Sleepy Owl.
Akron area scouts will send 280 scouts and leaders to the Fifth National Scouting Jamboree at Colorado Springs Colorado July 22 28. The Akron contingent will form seven troops with 37 boys and three leaders each under John L Feudner and J V Cairns. The national event draws 53200 scouts explorers and leaders for the Golden Jubilee celebration with the theme For God and Country.
Mrs Glen Haller spoke on the proposed Rittman Charter at the American Section Auxiliary meeting while Mrs Harry Ditch outlined the 1960 census and addressed reader questions. Donations to several charities were announced and an upcoming Child Welfare Report was planned for April 11.
Cub Scouts of Pack 3400 build five ounce pinewood racers for a two car track. Nearly 60 Rittman boys will race April 21 with top 10 advancing to a district Derby at Granger on April 23. Local race organizers include Bob Semler Glen Haller and W D Hilty. Remember Friday new 1960 license plates or face a fine.
