Rittman Senior Class Holds Work Week for Washington Trip

Rittman seniors run a work week from March 31 to April 12 offering baby sitting car washing and house cleaning. They will wash cars at homes throughout April with materials provided or supplied by clients. Proceeds fund a senior trip to Washington.

Band Dances Draw Area Youth To Rittman Saturday

Band parents invite youngsters from across the region to converge on Rittman for a Saturday night dance. A Cleveland DJ from Wooster is billed to perform with free records and albums to be given away. Proceeds benefit new band uniforms. The three hour event starts at 8 30 p m.

Mother-Daughter Banquet Planned by Missionary Guild

The Missionary Guild of the First Church of Christ set May Sh as the date for the annual Mother Daughter banquet. Ye Robert Meade heads the program committee. A covered dish supper at 6 pm followed by a social hour was planned. Funds from the meeting will aid the Burney family mission efforts in Peru.

Williams earns UP honor for Rittman center in All-Ohio team

Rich Williams, Rittman’s high scoring center, earned an honorable mention in the United Press Class A All-Ohio basketball selections. Savannah’s Larry Angler was on the first team and Boz Johnson of Northwestern got a second string spot, both named among Williams’ opponents.

Girl Scouts Sell Easter Seals to Aid Crippled Children

Girl Scouts will sell Easter Seals Saturday in downtown Rittman and at all-day locations. Proceeds support crippled children nationwide and the Easter Seal Therapy Center in Smithville. County drive shows nearly 50 percent of the $12,000 goal raised. 151 children in the county seek speech therapy.

Two cars collide on Ohio 3 near Wooster

A rear-end collision occurred on Ohio 3 five and seven tenths miles north of Wooster at 4 25 p.m. Monday. Donald D Sollenberger 36 Creston was struck by Harry C Hamilton 67 Cres ton. Damage was moderate. Hamilton was arrested by the Ohio Highway Patrol for failure to stop his car in time.

Doylestown old timers eye historic group formation

A Doylestown talk plans to form a historical association to preserve pioneer history. Anthony J. Paridon will discuss gathering interested locals after Easter to unite in a committee. The effort follows renewed public interest from Rogues Hollow articles and weekly reminiscences by old miners.

Mayor O A Houglan calls for citizen and group cooperation to start cleaning as soon as weather permits with a goal of a general clean-up by early May. He asks the Chamber of Commerce to lead publicity and cites complaints about unclean conditions along Salt Street and other yards to restore city pride.

Area students win in state speech tourney

John Weckesser of Doylestown High School placed fifth in humorous declamation at the state finals at Ohio State University. Doylestown entrants Bob Higgins and Karen Musser also competed in dramatic and extemporaneous categories. Norwayne’s Dave Schar joined extemporaneous. Thirty Wayne County students entered. trophies went to Wooster and Orrville students.

Library Week Open House Draws Large Crowd

A full library open house filled the room during National Library Week with 236 registrants. Mrs Avery Kinch reports 30 children from grades 3 to 5 attended the Saturday story hour featuring The Story of the Cat and Rasmus the Ostrich, read by Nicholas Thomas. A chocolate treat, a book reading by Mrs George Alexander, and a special dictionary award to Mrs Donald McLean highlighted the event.

Rittman Considers Building Code Tied to Fire Insurance

Council discussed adopting a building code to address fire inspection and insurance impacts. No action taken yet though a committee may study the code. Also advances in street paving petitions and sewer work near Route 4 were noted with plans to bid repairs and check state funding.

Rittman cites exemption delay in speech entry

Residents note Rittman did not enter the county speech contest and state finals in Columbus. School Superintendent Hainenstein says the district is exempt and lacks a dedicated speech teacher, forcing nonparticipation until it becomes a city or hires a specialist. Nearby districts use English teachers as speech instructors.
