Rittman seniors run a work week from March 31 to April 12 offering baby sitting car washing and house cleaning. They will wash cars at homes throughout April with materials provided or supplied by clients. Proceeds fund a senior trip to Washington.
Band parents invite youngsters from across the region to converge on Rittman for a Saturday night dance. A Cleveland DJ from Wooster is billed to perform with free records and albums to be given away. Proceeds benefit new band uniforms. The three hour event starts at 8 30 p m.
The Missionary Guild of the First Church of Christ set May Sh as the date for the annual Mother Daughter banquet. Ye Robert Meade heads the program committee. A covered dish supper at 6 pm followed by a social hour was planned. Funds from the meeting will aid the Burney family mission efforts in Peru.
Rich Williams, Rittman’s high scoring center, earned an honorable mention in the United Press Class A All-Ohio basketball selections. Savannah’s Larry Angler was on the first team and Boz Johnson of Northwestern got a second string spot, both named among Williams’ opponents.
Girl Scouts will sell Easter Seals Saturday in downtown Rittman and at all-day locations. Proceeds support crippled children nationwide and the Easter Seal Therapy Center in Smithville. County drive shows nearly 50 percent of the $12,000 goal raised. 151 children in the county seek speech therapy.
A rear-end collision occurred on Ohio 3 five and seven tenths miles north of Wooster at 4 25 p.m. Monday. Donald D Sollenberger 36 Creston was struck by Harry C Hamilton 67 Cres ton. Damage was moderate. Hamilton was arrested by the Ohio Highway Patrol for failure to stop his car in time.
A Doylestown talk plans to form a historical association to preserve pioneer history. Anthony J. Paridon will discuss gathering interested locals after Easter to unite in a committee. The effort follows renewed public interest from Rogues Hollow articles and weekly reminiscences by old miners.
The Rittman Press invites all area school children to submit colored drawings by 4 p.m. Tuesday April 2. Entries may be crayon pencil or paint with unlimited submissions per child, but one prize per person. Classroom winners advance to compete for a leather bound zipper notebook grand prize.
Milton Presbyterian Church hosts the annual Good Friday service from 1 30 to 3 p m with the theme The Cross Speakers include Rev Virgil Snyder Cross of Rejection Rev Albert Henry Cross of Repentance and Rev Charles Turner Cross of Redemption Dwight Davidson chairs the first session J W Plummer the second and J E Wheeling the third Special musical numbers will be performed by church groups.
Mrs Pauleat Doyle reports a girl born March 21 in town. Mrs Lynn Ziegler of Allville also announces a girl born March 21.
D Town council and Mayor met with property owners on March 25 to review Orchard Street paving estimates. A resolution named Commercial Banking and Trust Co Doylestown Branch as depository for Doylestown Village funds. Council accepted General Electric bid for Civil Defense two way radio. Don Lerch bid for new police cruiser approved. A G Goffinet bid for cemetery concrete build painting accepted.
Mayor O A Houglan calls for citizen and group cooperation to start cleaning as soon as weather permits with a goal of a general clean-up by early May. He asks the Chamber of Commerce to lead publicity and cites complaints about unclean conditions along Salt Street and other yards to restore city pride.
Recreation Director Homer Pyle announces a Derby instruction clinic at Recreation Hall on Tuesday April 1 at 7 pm. Movies from last year will be shown and this year’s rules discussed. Interested boys should attend and a county meeting for boys and parents info on March 9 at 7:30 pm at Wooster Armory.
James N Andrews executive vice president of the Ohio Boxboard Company was elected president of The Folding Paper Box Association of America. He has chaired the statistics committee in 1953 and 1954 and has held roles as director since 1948 and on the executive committee 1954 to 1956.
The School Board, teachers, and PTA met to discuss a proposed pay schedule by George Griffith and Robert Stoelmiller. The plan emphasizes higher salaries for teachers with a Master’s degree, gradual implementation, and funding via a bond issue, with a six to eight mill bond consideration and a three year rollout.
Norwayne High School announces top students across grades for the fourth six weeks. Seniors include David Schar Karen Hanna Donna Henderlong Reta Rastorfer Anne Chaffin Victoria Hanna Hal Hikson Ann Miller Marjorie Riggenbach Elaine Hartzler George Obermiller Judy Reese Judy Smeller Ron Winkler Sandy Russell. Juniors feature Carole Beery Betty Christian Janet Glasgow Madelyn Welty Bryan Barnes Janet Conrad Marcille Maine Gordon Welty Donna Voss Joe Blough Thelma Wilson. Sophomores showing all A’s include Richard Carpenter Dianne Ostovich and others with mixed A and B grades.
John Weckesser of Doylestown High School placed fifth in humorous declamation at the state finals at Ohio State University. Doylestown entrants Bob Higgins and Karen Musser also competed in dramatic and extemporaneous categories. Norwayne’s Dave Schar joined extemporaneous. Thirty Wayne County students entered. trophies went to Wooster and Orrville students.
A full library open house filled the room during National Library Week with 236 registrants. Mrs Avery Kinch reports 30 children from grades 3 to 5 attended the Saturday story hour featuring The Story of the Cat and Rasmus the Ostrich, read by Nicholas Thomas. A chocolate treat, a book reading by Mrs George Alexander, and a special dictionary award to Mrs Donald McLean highlighted the event.
Council discussed adopting a building code to address fire inspection and insurance impacts. No action taken yet though a committee may study the code. Also advances in street paving petitions and sewer work near Route 4 were noted with plans to bid repairs and check state funding.
Rittman Grange will meet Tuesday night April 1 at the Milton Two School from 7 to 8 p m. Walter Bauman will lead a Water Conservation discussion. Juveniles plan an Easter candlelight service with Kenneth Sonar on instrumental and Rocky Etling on vocal. Essays on highway safety to be presented.
Palm Sunday vesper services at Rittman High School 2 30 pm feature a chorus boy s quartet the Sixteens and a brass ensemble from the band A few students will read scripture and a free will offering will be taken The public is invited to attend.
Police Chief Charles Heffelman warns dog owners to confine pets to their property or face a fine. Stray dogs will be picked up and fined $50.
Residents note Rittman did not enter the county speech contest and state finals in Columbus. School Superintendent Hainenstein says the district is exempt and lacks a dedicated speech teacher, forcing nonparticipation until it becomes a city or hires a specialist. Nearby districts use English teachers as speech instructors.
Students from Norwayne and Doylestown joined peers from seven county schools at Smithville High School for the county one act play contests. Doylestown earned an excellent rating for The Monkey's Paw while Norwayne received a good score for Overtones.
The Rittman Mothers Club schedules a rummage sale at 19 Salt Street this weekend. Friday hours are 3 30 to 5 30 p m and Saturday runs 8 00 a m to noon. Proceeds support local club activities.
