HITS and BITS tour includes Akron and Chicago
Dottie Hilsheimer notes LuAnn Ferrer and Akron University Symphony Band will tour Chicago this week. The four day schedule features performances in Akron and Cleveland area schools and in Chicago. Ferrer, a freshman music education major from Rittman, plays trumpet.

John Hatfield 80 Rites Wednesday in Rittman
John F Hatfield 80 of Hatfield Road RD 1 died unexpectedly Sunday at home. Born April 5 1892 near Rittman to Almond and Clara Kissinger Hatfield he lived in the area all his life and retired in 1958 after five years at Morton Salt Co. Funeral at 1 30 p m Wednesday at the First Church of Christ with burial in Rittman. Gillman Funeral Home in charge.

Emergency mock wreck staged by Rittman Fire Dept
A planned disaster drill simulated a five-ambulance response to a multiple car crash in front of the Rittman Fire House. Jaycees volunteers acted as victims with injuries, and area squads from Rittman Sterling Doylestown Wadsworth and Chippewa No 2 assisted. Hospital staff mobilized quickly but two victims were pronounced dead and others sent to surgery or other facilities. The drill, coordinated with EMT instructors and fire chiefs, proceeded under secrecy until arrival at Wadsworth-Rittman Hospital.

Rittman Board approves REA contract with raises
At a Monday meeting the Rittman Board of Education approved a one year contract with the REA. The deal includes a 5.5 percent base salary increase for all staff, a Blue Cross Blue Shield ACR plan change, and raising the BA plus 20 schedule from 140 to 150 hours for new staff. The top salary under the agreement would reach 12,427 for an MA plus 20 on Step 12. Two personal leave days are provided and not charged to sick leave, with a simple personal business reason required for time off.

Mrs Miriam Jerry Roth 62 longtime West Hill School principal died Monday at Westview Manor Nursing Home after a long illness. Born February 11 191?, she lived in Syracuse before moving to Rittman 37 years ago. She graduated from Wittenberg University and Akron University, taught in Rittman elementary schools, and served as West Hill principal. Surviving daughter, brother, and three grandchildren. Services Thursday 1:30 pm at Milton United Presbyterian Church. Burial in Rittman Cemetery. Gillman Funeral Home in charge. Contributions requested to Wayne County Cancer Society.
