Ruth Eckhart 48 Former Resident Dies in Battle Creek

Ruth Irene Eckhart 48, of Battle Creek Michigan, died March 7 at Community Hospital after a February 17 admission. Born in Emmaus Pennsylvania she moved to Battle Creek in 1963 from Rittman Ohio. Survived by husband Clyde G two children Jean O'Brien and Richard A Eckhart mother Barbara Schaeffer siblings Arthur Wessner and four sisters. Services were held in Battle Creek and Emmaus with burial at Northwood Cemetery Emmaus. Richard A Henry Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Holy Week services set by area churches

Area churches announce Holy Week observances with Passion Sunday palm blessings at St. Anne Church across masses 6 30 p m and 8 10 15 a m on Sunday. The Passion of the Lord from St Matthew is read at all Masses. Holy Thursday Mass of the Last Supper at 7 p m recalls the Eucharist. Good Friday services begin at 2 p m ending about 3 p m with fast abstinence and devotion. Stations of the Cross follow at 7 30 p m with commentary.

Easter Vigil Services Begin With Paschal Candle Renewal

Saturday services start at 8 pm as the church remains darkened after Friday. The rite continues with the blessings of the Easter fire and Paschal Candle, the renewal of Baptismal vows, and ends with the mass anticipating the Resurrection of Jesus. Continued on Page 7.

Chasing Firetrucks Warns Officials in Public Safety Notice

Chief Lawrence Cline begins publishing safety vehicle rules under Section 4511.72 of the Ohio Revised Code. Prohibits following an emergency vehicle within five hundred feet and prohibits parking within the fire scene block. Penalties include fines up to fifty dollars, with higher fines or jail time for repeat offenses. Community calendar lists multiple meetings for March 19 through 25.

Rittman Legion Post Celebrates 56th Birthday Event

The Rittman American Legion Howard A. Bair Post held a Saturday birthday party for the 56th year of the Legion. Members and guests enjoyed a buffet and singing. Willard Haventstein, former school superintendent, spoke of teaching days, while Commander Bob Wenger highlighted the post’s past year and urged lawmakers to oppose draft-averse legislation.

Boosters Host Sports Banquet

The Rittman All-Sports Booster Club will hold the Winter Sports Banquet on Tuesday March 25 in the high school multi purpose room with a covered dish dinner buffet style. Gary Fowler wrestling coach at the College of Wooster and former YMCA and European champion will be guest speaker. Dinner starts 6 30 p.m. Awards 7 45 p.m. Attendees can join the awards program if unable to attend the dinner.

The Energy Conservation Committee of the Rittman Chamber of Commerce invites comments from citizens at its first meeting on March 13. Residents may submit questions about energy use and costs, ideas, information requests, or complaints to the Chamber or verbally to committee members.

Derailment Causes Propane Gas Seare

Rittman volunteers responded to a B and O freight derailment west of Main Street. Twenty cars derailed, two overturned spilling iron ore onto Orlin W Shanafelt property and a 500 gallon propane tank, damaged shut-off allowing leakage. Explosives risk guarded. tracks to remain closed during cleanup.
