Red Cross fund drive nears its goal with total gifts reported at 4500 as canvassers finish rounds this week. Mrs. W. W. Bodagen reports 4498.50 from the Army test at noon today. individuals contribute 3948.55, Rittman industries 550, school collections 236.94 led by First Street building with 138.10. Saltse town resident gives top gift of 100. Bodager Agency on the Square accepts remaining contributions.
No men were put in 1-A this week by the Eastern Wayne County draft board. Twelve men were reclassified from 4-E to 2C, and four men moved from 1-A to 2-C, with timing given as prior meetings.
The senior class presents One Mad Night, a mystery farce in three acts, on Friday night April 20. Directed by Miss Helen Murray from Marion College Indiana, the cast rehearses at the school as invitations go to all interested attendees. Helen Murray will speak at Wesleyan Methodist Church on Friday evening March 23.
Evangelist W A Butcher will be the speaker at the Conservative Church of Christ on March 18 at 10 30. The sermon promises a kindly presented truth by the gospel preacher. The church meets in the Union Hall above the Long Super Market and invites all to attend.
Rev Wert Dean presides as pastor with Bible School at 9 30 and morning worship at 10 15. J C Schaefer superintendent leads morning worship and communion. Evening services include Christian Endeavor at 6 30 and a 7 30 sermon by the pastor.

Revival meetings begin March 19 at the Smithville Brethren Church and run through April 1 with nightly services at 7 48. Rev and Mrs Harry Ricker singing and preaching evangelists from Peru Indiana lead the revival. Everyone is welcomed by Pastor Rev J G Dodds.
W H Hauenstein states that the Qualifying Test for the Army Specialized Training Reserve will be held Thursday April 12 1945 at Rittman high school. Eligible youths must be 14 by October 1 1944 to August 31 1945 and not older than 17 years 9 months on graduation or college term completion.
Rittman donors joined the Gallon Club last week honoring their blood donations. Mrs Fred Blatter and Mrs Cletus Hardgrove became seventh time donors. New members include Mrs John Walker and Mrs Cletus Coffman. Several others reached the 10th and 11th donations to meet quotas.
Mrs. Catherine McElwee aged 94, mother of Joseph M. McElwee of Rittman, was buried in Calvary cemetery New Philadelphia last Saturday. She died at the home of a son in law there. Surviving are five daughters two sons 40 grandchildren and 62 great grandchildren.
Parents of PFC Matthaw Hubiak of the 7th division report no word since a February 9 war department note said he was seriously wounded at Manila. They reside on I State Street and hope he can write when able.
Grace Wenger turns 19 on May 19 and her brother Ben, hospitalized at Ledo Burma, will be 20 on March 20. Fire department reports two calls to Howe and Qualman lumber yard fire on Sunday night and a quick search for Pan Baker's missing two year old ends when found in basement. The town notes a ground breaking by Elmer Bobager and farm work, plus talk of seed buying and garden cleanup. A transient man, Steve Hegger, threatened the bank for $5,000 tied to a bond drive. A gas rate ordinance would raise charges after 15 000 cubic feet monthly, citing Texas gas supply limits.
Selective Service Board No 2 met last Monday evening with four men deemed eligible for 1-A call Victor L Butzer James R Gadson Harvey E Kerr and Glenn R Miller. two others Christian Gelser Jr and Richard D Miler placed in 1 AO for non combat duty. Of 29 reporting February 28 two were rejected. 15 assigned to Army and 11 to Navy. Mrs Wayne Truax and a baby returned home Wednesday from Wadsworth Hospital.
Remodeling and wiring at the Press plant require 16 electric motors and 43 lights to run. A new war order for 1,064,000 pieces arrived Saturday. A war wife was urged by her husband overseas to subscribe to the local paper, read it promptly, and mail it to him by air as soon as possible.
District Governor Harry Volton of Akron officiated as five new members were welcomed: Harry Bedford, Tom Young, A J Grant, Kenneth Osborne, and Ned Long.
President Roosevelt named John J. Wein 59 of Akron and formerly of Rittman for U S marshal of the Cleveland district. Wein, a former state fire marshal and 10 year deputy chief marshal, would succeed George J. Kennath. He was backed by Ray T. Miller and lawmakers Crosser Felghan Kirwan. senate action pending.
Boy Scout Troop 410 met at City Hall on Thursday evening March 8 with 26 of 29 present. They recited the Scout Oath and Pledge to the Flag and reviewed Tenderfoot knots. Ray Twinem led games and songs. Benediction closed the session.
Rittman prepares for a United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration clothing collection in April. The drive aims to gather 160 million pounds of usable clothing for war-devastated nations with volunteers from churches clubs unions Scouts schools and individuals leading the effort. Also noted are local leadership changes including the Stoolmiller market sale and several town offices, plus a new six-alley bowling center under construction with a planned early April opening.
Mrs Martha Werntz Stevanco 19 of Marshallville died instantly at 7 30 p m Wednesday on route 548 north of Marshallville when the Ford Tudor sedan she rode in skidded overturned and she was thrown out the door Miss Florence Nolt 19 of Marshallville drove the car and was injured as were the other passenger Mrs Dale Trent of Rittman The Frase Funeral Home will handle arrangements and sheriff deputies investigated the crash Surviving are her parents D C and Mrs Werntz and several brothers and sisters in Marshallville and nearby towns.
Sterling defeated Fredericksburg 56 43 in the Wooster Township gym finals to claim their third straight independent tourney title. Ralph Rupp and J Calame led Sterling with 12 points each while Spencer scored 11 for Fredericksburg. A Red Cross collection was taken with no admission charged.

Susie Pikla, an operative patient at Wadsworth Hospital, will return home Friday marking a planned discharge from the facility.
A daughter was born Thursday morning March 15 at Wadsworth Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Finley Thompson of S. Main Street. The infant weighs in as Peggy Lee, with the name attributed to Joan Messer.
