The Indians defeated Columbiana 32 to 22 in the Kent District Tournament. Village officials report full settlement with the Public Works Administration for the great street paving project in Rittman, with all contracts paid and debt within the 10-mill limit.
Wooster college German professor William Schreiber spoke at a Rotary luncheon in the Presbyterian church parlors on Why I Am Neutral. He argued the European war stemmed from economic conditions and that all warring nations are sinners while America has little to gain and much to lose by entering the conflict. Attending members A L Ebert and Dr C C Gregg reported 100% attendance. A H Thomas and J J Gannon are vacationing in Florida. B M Welch appointed Batley Hen Oe See Committee to plan attendance at the District Conference in Lima in late April.
Heavy rains delivering 1.66 inches flooded flats south and east of Rittman and many basements. Roads between Wooster and Burbank, Rogue's Hollow road, and route 95 south of Doylestown were impassable. Washouts occurred on routes 548 241 604 302 95 and 94 with minimal local damage.
Dallas Warner of Lodi takes over the Jos. Sherrick Barber Shop on Main Street as manager. He has 22 years in barbering and will also run the dry cleaning agency while planning possible retirement to a farm. Oscar Miracle stays as assistant. Warner and family plan to move to Rittman soon.
The colored quartet from Wadsworth will sing at the Young People's meeting Sunday night at 6 45 and again at the evening service. Rev First will preach. Everyone is welcome at the Wesleyan Mission located above Ralph's Hardware on 5 Main Street.
The Ohio Injector Co will relocate its tire valve unit from Wadsworth to Sterling, in the former wrench works on Sterling Rittman road. The 30 by 25 foot building will be remodeled for machining and assembly and testing with power lines and a well added. Operations start within two months under president Wayne Young and superintendent E A Young, with sales directed by William F Groff of Akron.
Several Rittman persons were involved in minor auto accidents while en route to Ashland Friday night to attend the basketball games. Raymond Bell’s car was damaged after rear ending a truck driven by Ledale Amstutz. Sterling Glenn Adams’ car spun on ice but only a broken headlamp was damaged. another car struck C W Zimmerman at Lodl.
Funeral services for Mrs. Emma Lookabaugh 74 of Rittman were held Tuesday at 2 pm at Ebert Funeral Home with Rev C J McGee officiating. Burial followed at Crown Hill Cemetery. Survivors include three sons Oliver Cincinnati Carl Shiloh LeRoy Wooster four daughters Avery Metcalf Earl Daughtery Emmet Dingey Barberton Bernice Warnhall Mansfield and one sister Mrs Lillan Smith Cleveland.
Julia Keating former Ritt operator becomes new owner and manager of the Ritz Beauty Shop after completing a sale with Clif Breyley. She has managed Rainbow Beauty Shop in Tallmadge and will retain one operative while adding Susanne Sullivan as beautician and manicurist to staff.
The Sam Swain Evangelistic Party led by Dr. Sam Swain will visit Rittman’s United Brethren Church starting March 10. The Nashville group, known as The Autograph of God, features Mrs. Georgia Swain as soloist and youth director with Tracy Bowles as accompanist.
The Rittman Junior High team coached by Merle Graber has won seven of nine. Ramsier leads with 49 points, followed by Petkoff with 45 and Smith with 42. New uniforms were bought this winter as the squad builds fundamentals for high school success. The team aims for two more games as their season totals include wins over Orrville Dalton Seville Marshallville Doylestown Geville and more.
Irvin McCloud, 55, of Rittman died Friday night from a broken neck and other injuries after his car rear ended an Ohio Edison Co. truck on Route 94 east of Rittman. Boyd Chance, 31, the car’s driver, was intoxicated and charged with traffic violations.
The Rittman Civic Association met Tuesday afternoon with five members present. The discussion centered on fishing in Canada before the group adjourned by common consent.
Mrs Lawson Smith of Rittman is declared winner in the misspelled word contest at A H Thomas Drugstore with 76 correct of 80. Mary Catherine McGorry places second with 73 correct answers. Miss Prances Clark judged the entries.
A Rich Brothers Garage representative signed a warrant for Paul Gordon of Rittman on embezzlement charges. Justice of the Peace Boy Baker issued the warrant, Marshal Heffelman circulated a police broadcast, and Gordon reportedly left town with a loaned $416 and another car after trading autos with a Rittman resident.
Marshal Charles Heffelman arrested Burnie Wilson and Leonard Killough for fighting and disorderly conduct. They were tried before Mayor John Baldwin and fined six dollars each. A girl identified as 1053 Bastabiat was held after running away, dressed as a boy, before being returned to Cleveland. Tony Stasinski faced reckless driving charges, fined fifty dollars and costs. Frank Tay of Akron was arrested for intoxication and ordered out of town.
Rittman Indians defeated Columbiana 39 to 23 at Kent, earning a district bracket clash with South Amherst Friday night. Simonton and Schaad led scoring with 12 and 10 points as Ramsier and Rosenberg anchored defense under the boards. The win sets up Rittman vs South Amherst at 7 36 p m with the Columbus bid on the line.
E. O. Frank, local secretary of the civil service commission, will conduct an examination for postmaster at Burbank Saturday at 8 20 a m. at City Hall Burbank. Four persons are expected to take the examination for the position in Northern Wayne County.
RAMSIER and SIMONTON headline the all tournament team with Swain Cain and Mark Sistler of nearby towns also honored. Unanimous selections include Ramaier Cain Stotler, while second team features Cuts ter Apple Creek Gard ner Loudonville center Wards Schaad Rosenberg and Etewiler guards. Additional players from Rittman Apple Creek Loudonville received votes.
The Rittman Board of Education granted 300 dollars to the recreation fund for 1940 activities and, with year to year parity, approved 210 for weather stripping and caulking of windows. They reimbursed Frank E Harter for gym opening services and authorized lighting upgrades and a biology chart purchase. Transportation for a boy with a broken leg was approved.
