Akron boy pugilist Fred Smith to fight for 75-pound class crown

13 year old Fred Smith training at Rice quarters has defeated three opponents at Akron Armory since last Wednesday in the 75 pound class. He now meets Glen Switzer of Sawyerwood in tonight's bout to decide the Akron tournament winner with potential paths to Cincinnati and beyond. Switzer weighs 78 pounds and Fred tops at 73. The American Legion and Akron recreation department sponsor the tournament.

Mrs Cyrus Stauffer Buried At Orrville

Mrs Cyrus Stauffer of Orrville died last Saturday at age 84 from pneumonia related age collapse. She was mother of eleven with nine surviving and left nineteen grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren. Funeral held at Mrs Margaret Kapp’s home in Orrville and Union Church with interment in Union Cemetery. Attendees from Rittman included C B Wenger Alpha Spade and others.

Rittman Triumphs In Euchre Clash At Wadsworth

In a Monday night match at Wadsworth the Rittman Legion boys defeated Wadsworth by 10 games in euchre while bridge results were less favorable for the locals. A rematch is set for March 17 in Rittman as Wadsworth eyes a comeback.

Cleveland Man Talks at Rotary Meeting

The Inter-city Rotary event at the UK church parlors drew about 55 members from the Rittman Notary club. Acton Brownell spoke on Rotary Credits and Debits, introducing by Pres "Chorley." Brownell, former Pittsburgh club president, now runs a Cleveland hardware business.

Mother of Clarence Fawcett Succumbs

Mrs Fawcett mother of Clarence Fawcett, well known in Rittman, died last week. Funeral arrangements at New Philadelphia as Mr Fawcett to be remembered. he has lived with his parents since his wife’s death. A sister has moved into the family home to care for him. Mr and Mrs Clayton Dohner attended the funeral.

California Artist Student Chooses Metropolitan School

Harry Griner, now at 202 West 62nd Street Los Angeles, enrolled at the Metropolitan School of Fine Arts. He studies window decorating and general art, and was chosen to decorate Los Angeles business house windows. He also coaches a YMCA basketball team.

The Christian Star Sunday school class contest divided the class into three sections the Men Women and Christian Star classes to raise performance. The competition ran from the second Sunday in January to March 1 with new mentors and points tallied for each class.

Golden Wedding Anniversary of Mr and Mrs John R Hile

Mr and Mrs John R Hile celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at home on West First Street. Born in West Moreland County Pa and Wayne County, Mrs Hile is a native of Wayne County. Married March 1 1881 in Wooster Ohio by Rev Winbigh. There are fourteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren. They are 76 years old. Friends and neighbors presented gold coins flowers and an anniversary cake.

Gail Lance Honored Again on Wooster Honor Roll

Mia Gall Lance of Rittman is listed among Wooster College students placed on the Honor Roll for the first semester of the school year. Twenty two students earned an A grade with no grade below B across all subjects. The list, announced by Registrar Arthur F. Southwick, shows five seniors, four juniors, four sophomores and five freshmen on the all A list. Written records also show 34 seniors, 25 juniors, 24 sophomores and 33 freshmen with no grade under B.

Sign Relocated for Higher Traffic On Route 17

A Rotary Club and Automobile Club sign named Rittman was moved from Jackson to the foot of Acme hill on route 17 after high rent. The relocation, decided at a Tuesday night auto club meeting, places the sign north of Rittman to benefit from heavier summer traffic and the hidden road leading this way.

Liquor Violations and Break‑In Cases Heard by Mayor

Mayor Hanes and Mills court heard liquor violations and a house break in case. Mike Seneck of East Obtono and Joe Milko were fined for possessing liquor. Milko’s fine reached 300 dollars, second offense. Fred Anderson pleaded to breaking into Alfred Anderson’s home, with items recovered and bound over to the grand jury. Alfred Alderson is not related to Fred.

Couple celebrates wedding anniversary in Wadsworth

Hines forged an entrance into the Wright home to mar the day while Me andora Wright invited friends to call on Wednesday for a Goth wedding anniversary. Mrs Weight fell ill Sunday and stayed in bed as guests arrived. Mrs Relmer and Mrs Renner helped receive, with little cakes marked 60 and coffee served. Relatives from Indiana attended. The Wrights lived in Rittman for years and now reside in Wadsworth.

Infant Daughter Dies in Akron Hospital

Little Mary Gwendolyn Hardgrove two weeks old died at 9 oclock Wednesday morning at an Akron hospital after a Tuesday transfer. She had been ill and underwent an operation. funeral services were held Thursday at 2:30 PM at St Ann s Catholic Church with burial in St Ann s Cemetery.
