Burnett Wins Street Garage Addition Bid in Rittman

Virgil Burnett of Rittman secured the bid for an addition to the street department garage on Sterling Avenue. His bid of 2521.20 was the second lowest among nine bids after the lowest bid was disqualified for missing a performance bond. Council also reviewed six bids for a new street sweeper, with a decision delayed for further study. the lowest bid stood at 9160.36.

Rittman High to Administer National Merit Test March 8

Twenty one students at Rittman High School will take the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test at 8 a.m. Tuesday March 8. Principal John R Heter announced the three hour exam aims to measure educational development and aptitude. Results will be reported to participating schools before the spring semester ends for counsel and course planning.

Old Rt 5 May Be County Road

County likely to take over old State Route 5 through Doyles town after summer unless state objects. County would then maintain the road while state would prefer it to serve as an alternate Route 5 with state maintenance. A state official says once the new Route 5 bypass is finished, the old section will no longer be maintained by the state.

Sinbad the Blood Donor Newfoundland Saves a Life

The Butler family dog Sinbad donated a half pint of blood during a canine operation in Columbia Station. The 10-year-old Newfoundland, a blue ribbon winner shown at Madison Square Garden, remained conscious throughout the transfusion. City Council backs compulsory paving of new streets

After a Monday meeting the Planning Commission and council reached an unofficial agreement to require paving of streets once 60 percent of lots in a new subdivision are sold. Deeds must state paving, with costs assessed by benefit rather than front foot.

Blood Drive Planned in Rittman by Red Cross Unit

The Red Cross Bloodmobile will visit Rittman March 23 at the American Legion Hall from noon to 6 pm. Donors from Rittman and nearby towns are needed to reach a 150 pint goal. Recruiting chairwomen and volunteers, including Mesdames Herald Miller and Glen Parman, organize the effort and call 551 for appointments.

Plastic Plant Coming to Reopen Packing Firm

A small plastics plant will be built on Industrial Street in Rittman by local backers forming Imperial Plastics. Construction will start when weather allows, with Paul Jime as contractor and operation expected in three to four months. Only a few will be employed initially. The lot measures 128 by 350 feet beside the Art Craft Company.

Pythians Sponsor Highway Safety Poster Contest

Knights of Pythias Sterling Lodge sponsors the fifth annual Highway Safety Poster Contest. Paul Glessner chairs the steering committee with E. J. McCon­nell and Ad Greene on the panel. Graber Named to Civil Defense Committee

New Scout Troop Set By Rotary

Rittman Rotary Club plans a second Boy Scout troop to join the existing jointly sponsored unit with the American Legion. Willard D. Hilty will supervise organization and a scout master and assistant will be named soon. The Akron Council notes Rittman scouts top the council in camping. each troop aims for 10 camp-outs yearly.
