Mrs. Roy Swainhart of Sterling reports a sparrow hawk in her yard, described as brown winged with gold tinge. Rittman council votes to convert a vacant Main and Salt streets lot into a parking area with a $250 city grant to grade the surface for 21 spaces, contingent on merchants’ building refurbishments and a long term lease. The plan, backed by Mayor Hall’s approval and City Manager Laughlin, aims to ease Main Street congestion and spur south side renewal with ACTIONs support.
Wadsworth Rittman Hospital Association officials await final formality before a $1,000,000 federal grant for a new hospital. Hospital administrator William R. Rundle attended a Columbus hearing where objections could be raised. none were voiced and final commitment is expected soon.
The Rittman board of education will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the high school home economics room for its first meeting of the month. A second meeting is scheduled for Tuesday March 22.

School officials amid new federal aid programs seek staff to manage grants for cultural and instructional upgrades. Superintendent W H Hauenstein cites a looming need for reading instructors and equipment funded locally while salaries rise to attract teachers.
The Buckeye Garden Club will fund civic beautification at the Rittman Public Library this year. Seven members met at the Savines-Bank rooms with Mrs Charles Grant assisting. Betty Newton will receive members for the March 22 meeting at the Columbus Gas of Ohio office on North Main Street.
A credit union representative will speak to area education associations in Wooster on Tuesday March 8 at Bowman Junior High. Rittman educators will attend as Richard E Pershing of the Ohio Credit Union League discusses a counts wide credit union.
Mrs Fran Sandrock named news editor of the Rittman Press this week by publisher Lindsey Williams. She has four and a half years with the paper as reporter and photographer and 24 years in Rittman. Her husband George and daughters Shari and Nancy live at 245 West Sunset. son Steve attends Ohio University.
Rittman Cemetery marks its 1000th burial per cemetery superintendent Coy S. Drake records. The numbering began in 1932 with five prior superintendents: Charles Deter Oliver Bensinger Orion M Spade Harlan Ashley and Edward Masser. Masser led 1948 through 1962, Ashley in 1952, Spade about four years before 1948, and Bensinger just before Masser. The cemetery has existed for over 150 years and is owned by the city of Austrean.
Local outlets Sunset Lanes and Stop N Go began selling 32 beer on Sundays after liquor licenses but the unwritten agreement among tavern keepers to avoid all alcohol sales on Sundays drew protests from Dom's Bar owner Dominic Calabria. City officials say state law allows Sunday 32 beer and will not back a ban. Bauer of Sunset Lanes agreed to close on Sundays. Stop N Go will consider the request after a meeting with supervisors. The voluntary pact originated from a church-led campaign to bar intoxicants in Rittman, a referendum failing by a narrow margin.
Services for Claire A. Boss 53 of Sterling Road 1 were held Monday at Gillman Funeral Home. Boss died Thursday afternoon at Wooster Community Hospital after a three hour admission. A truck driver for Packaging Corporation of America and longtime Sterling resident, he was born June 1 1912 near Orrville. Surviving are his wife Esther and daughter Mary Ann, his parents Arnold and Mrs Ross, brothers Glade Sterling Roy Burbank Walter Smithville, sisters Mrs Freda Bachman and Mrs Arlene Maibach both of Sterling. A sister Clara died earlier. Burial was in Rittman Cemetery with Rev. W Franklin Lahr officiating.
The annual Jackson Day dinner will be held at Smithville Inn on Saturday March 5 at 6 30. Tickets are available from E McConnell who is retiring Wayne County Democratic chairman. Speakers will include Robert Sweeny and Robert Secrest.
Otterbein University freshman Carol Beth McCoy of Westerville received the Pledge of the Year honor for the most support to her sorority Kappa Phi Omega. A member of PanHellenic Council and stage crew for A Town and Gown, she is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles McCoy of 200 West Sunset and a 1965 graduate of Rittman High School.
In mock Youth in Government voting at Boys Village Tuesday night Gail Taylor won a seat on the county board of education and Don Meade was named county commissioner. John Chiampo was sheriff while additional posts went to Stanley Yarnell Norwayne High School for county commissioner Bob Merckle Norwayne probate judge Larry Woodford Doylestown High mu vivical judge Bruce Van Deventer Doylestown and John Shearer WNor- Wayne for county treasurer. The three candidates advance to final elections at Triway High School later this week.
An area junior high band and chorus contest will be held at Rittman High School on Saturday May 14 with about 3000 students expected. Schools from Summit Portage Medina and Wayne counties will participate across two stages judged by nine officials. District Six leaders and Band Parents plan concessions and student transport while the junior high concert band performed a sample program at the meeting.
Clarence Garver of Wooster will speak at the Rittman Rotary Club Thursday noon at Evangelical United Brethren Church. He will present a pictorial on how people can combat and control cancer. Garver is a volunteer with the Wayne County American Cancer Society with over 15 years of service.
