Council considers and tables proposed planning rules for curb and gutter installation in subdivisions. Modifications allow future installation after 50 percent of lots are built or on an assessment basis if agreeable to developer and planning commission. Officials emphasize clear labeling for buyer awareness.
Prospects looked bright this week to equal last year’s Cancer Drive total in Rittman as contributions to date reached 1405.87 dollars. The 1954 total was 1466.54 dollars. Mrs. K. W. Osborne and Mrs. Ralph Gwaltney, co chairmen, thanked all the volunteers for their work.

Forest A Frase retired Doylestown funeral director died at his Gates Street home after a ten month illness. He operated the funeral home in Doylestown 18 years until 1948, later selling to Law rence Mill then L M Monbarren. He was born in Baughman township, lived in Orrville, active in Masonic circles, Business men’s association, Doylestown Lions and Zion Lutheran Church. Survived by wife Ach sah and two sisters. Services set for 2 p.m. Thursday at the Monbarren Funeral Home with Rev David Tate. burial in St Michael Cemetery. Friends may call after Wednesday noon.
Mrs W W Bodayer attended the kickoff meeting in Wayne County Court House Wooster Friday night to start the 1955 Red Cross membership drive. Ralph E Fisher, county chapter chairman, said the best definition of the Red Cross is that it is people helping people.
Mr and Mrs Ira Heffleman of High Street Doylestown mark 71 years since their 1884 marriage in Akron. Heffleman, born in Doylestown, was a farmer until retirement. He and his wife, born 1855 in Plainfield Illinois, have five children nine grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. They are longtime members of the local Methodist church.
Cumberland River Boys Quartet will perform Sunday from 2 to 4 PM at First Baptist Church of Rittman. The Guiding Light Quartet, sponsor, announces other stops at Country Baptist Church Akron Saturday 7 30 PM Canton Baptist Temple Sunday 10 30 AM and Wooster Baptist Temple Sunday 7 30 PM.
In Cleveland a midnight Sunday crash left 14 year old Richard Perry and his mother with injuries. Richard Perry is in critical condition at a hospital. his mother’s condition is reported improved. The driver was Mrs. Walter Perry, of Clover Street. both sustained injuries.
The Rittman Indians lost their fifth game in nineteen starts and their first CBL Teague game to the Orrville Red Riders Friday night by 82 79. It snapped the Indians 16 game winning streak and left Rittman with a 14 5 record after a close start with a 20 18 first quarter lead.
R V Fredrick with 17 years service faced a council vote on his resignation. The mayor breaking a 4-3 tie refused to accept the resignation and granted a six month leave of absence. Warren Hardgrove was named to replace during the leave.
The Ritt man Rotary Club will welcome Mr. Larey a representative of Ohio Bell Telephone Co Cleveland as guest speaker at the regular Thursday dinner meeting in K A B Church social rooms. Larey will discuss interstate dialing operations and give limited demonstrations. Don Stepfield is program chairman.
A city meeting is set for Monday March 7 at 7 PM in City Hall to discuss teen misdeeds and youth problems. Mayor Baldwin invites citizens and groups to share ideas on community actions, parental roles, and possible steps to address delinquency.
Miss Erika Quapp of Stuttgart, Germany, will join the Mennonite Old People’s Home in Rittman for six months as a participant in the European trainee program sponsored by the Mennonite Central Committee. She and 33 other European Mennonite youths will meet in Whitewater Kansas for an evaluation conference March 4 to 6 after six months in Broadway Virginia. The program, registered with the State Department, aims to foster American European understanding and is led by the Mennonite Central Committee, the American Mennonite relief agency.
Jess Watts was fined 50 dollars and costs for intoxication and disorderly conduct with 35 dollars suspended before Mayor John Baldwin. Charles Long received 50 dollars and costs with 40 dollars suspended in Barberton Municipal Court for petit larceny after allegedly stealing two fender skirts and two hub caps.
Rittman Grange will oversee the opening and closing ceremonies at a joint meeting on Friday night March 4 hosted by Chippewa Grange. The Baughman Grange will exemplify the first degree work and Smithville Grange will conduct the second degree work.

Six Rittman teenage boys will appear before Judge Myron Brenneman facing charges for admitting involvement in 14 breakings and entries at Rittman schools, the private homes, and businesses in Rittman Wadsworth and Norton Center. They were arrested after police questioned witnesses and preliminary hearings held Friday. bond set at 500 dollars each, remaining jailed in Wooster.

Don Stepfield, manager at Doylestown Telephone Co., oversees a Monday activation of a modern automatic switchboard system costing over 45000. The upgrade lets Cleveland and metropolitan area callers dial directly to Doylestown subscribers and serves 70 more customers with room for expansion beyond the 700 current users. The project marks continued growth of the firm formerly run by Stepfield’s grandfather.
