A March Red Cross fund drive aims for at least 5000 dollars as 27 solicitors and the committee met at City Hall for a pep meeting. New canvassers include Mrs George Secrest Mrs Ray Johnson Mrs Beachy Mrs Gerald Spaulding and Mrs Ralph Holsberg. The Wayne County Chapter reports thousands of kit bags surgical dressings garments and blood donations supporting servicemen and their families.
Ohio begins sale of a single license plate per car due to metal scarcity. The plate features white numerals on a dark blue background and must be displayed on the rear. Over 800 deputy registrars are ready to issue the new plate, requiring title certificates and signed applications. motorists urged to scrap old plates and note new numbers on gas ration book covers.
Helen Pate of Creston files for divorce from Earl Pate also of Creston in common pleas court at Wooster. They wed Oct 29 1922 and have 12 children aged 3 to 20. She accuses him of gross neglect cruelty excessive drinking and failure to provide for wife and minors. Attorney C E Rhonemus of Rittman represents the plaintiff.
Paul and Ethel Johnson transfer 30 acres in Canaan Township to Floyd B. and Helen H. Winkler for $1. Emma Mittner and others transfer Rittman property to Bud and Mary L. Stoll for $1. Charles W. Smith transfers 85 acres in Canaan Township to George Robert Smith for $1. Alfred J. and Lorna E. Gantz transfer Creston Iot to Isaac A. and Carrie H. Huegle for $1.
Alpheas J. Yoder of Barberton, a farmer, applies for marriage to Ruth Hartzler of Rittman.
Rittman ration board issued Grade 1 tires to eight residents last week. Recipients include W. A. Blatter Bert Harter Clarence Imhoff Herbert Smith W. H. Lowry Joseph Grossenbacher Delone Bowman Ezra Beery.
Sixty one Eastern Wayne men were placed in Class 1 A on Monday night with fifty five named. The list includes Walter E Anderson Burton C Beaver Robert I Blackburn Herman W Brown and other local residents. Many are on the replacement schedule for 60 to 90 days or until their replacement date expires.
The Wooster draft board assigns classifications: 2-A to Charles O Younger of Sterling Route 1. 2-B to Carl D Farner of Rittman. William Hosmer, formerly of Sterling and partner in a Wooster shoe store, is listed 4-F.
Mrs. Margaret Ebert 88 widow of Isaac Ebert and mother of A. L. Ebert of Rittman died at her daughter’s Wooster home after illness. Funeral services were held at the Geo Barnard residence with Rev J H Warner of Congress Presbyterian officiating and burial in Wooster cemetery. Survived by son H B Ebert of Cleveland and daughter Mrs George Barnard.
Charles S. Herman, 19, husband of Donna M. Herman of 250 Industrial St., completed an intensive Machinist’s Mate training at the Service School in Great Lakes IL. He was chosen for specialized training based on aptitude test scores and will join active duty or further schooling at sea or shore stations.
Russell Howell, a 41 E Ohio resident and father of four, was accepted for the Army after passing pre induction in Cleveland on February 21. He is pictured with his wife and sons Gerald 13 Larry 9 Dwaine 7 and Neal 4. The family plans to stay in their rented home as Mrs Howell seeks part time work to supplement the Army allotment. Howell had worked for Ohio Salt Co. and since last summer as a war carpenter for Schafer Wilson Co. in Akron remodeling homes for war workers and does rug cleaning in spare time.
John H Fisher and W A Garver were named to a county planning commission for post war road construction at Wooster meeting. Walter Locker was elected president with Fisher as vice president. A letter urged early clearance for a new boxboard outlet from Rittman to Seville via the Erie crossing and N Main Street route.
A call received today orders 164 men to report to Cleveland on March 22 for pre induction physical examinations. The instruction lists the draft lot number 164 and specifies the date and purpose for the medical review of willing inductees.
Fire Chief Winkler explains the long siren blare caused many residents calling the operator for details about the fire. The operator is too busy, so authorities ask the public to refrain from calling for at least five minutes after the siren stops unless there is an emergency.
The Echols brothers famed quartet performed at Seville's Methodist church Sunday in what may be their last Singspiration during the war. M. V. Echols, the first tenor, has been accepted in the Navy, and Rollie Hogan, the bass, awaits Army call.

The Red Cross Blood Donor drive seeks daily quota of 175 pints for next Thursday and Friday March 9 and 30. Six or more local donors already gave five times. more first time donors are urged to register. Phone Mia or J R West, 193 W, for appointments with transportation provided each afternoon from City Hall.
The Rittman Indians suffered a 60 to 23 defeat at Wooster High as Wooster dominated from the center with accurate shooting. Ted Wires and Rod Swinehart led Wooster with 18 points each, featuring seven baskets and seven free throws.
The new tournament rule pins exempted Rittman Orrville and Loudonville in one bracket with Rittman set to meet Loudonville in the opener. Orrville faces Sterling after a county league foe, while Ashland College gym hosts A H S on Friday March 3 at 9 15 p m as the last game of the four game card with Chester versus Jeromesville Perrysville versus Smithville and Sterling versus Orrville on the schedule.
Wooster defeated Rittman 52 to 14 in the third period as Glenn McConnell led the Indians with six points on two field goals and two fouls. Rittman trailed 19 to 5 after the first quarter and dropped to a tie for second with Wooster after a 9 point fourth. Loudonville clinched the Central Buckeye League by 67 to 34 over the Spartans.
The Tin Can Collection drew large participation countywide and in Rittman. A city truck was loaded to the cab top and barely made it to Wooster. A pile driver packed the cans into a car, totaling 20 tons.

Merrill T. Neitzelt son of Mr and Mrs Merr Neitzelt of Rittman Ohio returned to the coast after a 30 day leave from service in the Aleutians. He took part in the Attu and Riksa invasions and noted no women for four months until a USO show lifted spirits. He added that brothers Hubert Neitzelt attended Diesel school at the University of Illinois and is aboard a minesweeper.
Captain James Sigler, 22, earns new rank after flying 87 missions in a P-40 over North Africa, Sicily, and Italy. He recently postponed his honeymoon with his bride from February. Sigler’s overseas service spans about a year. his wife, formerly Bileei Copley, and his family in Rittman share the news.
