The annual Rittman Community Auction drew hundreds and raised 375 for Lions Club and Boosters Club. Volunteers Myron Steiner and Paul Marty conducted the bidding. Lions Club representative Chet Haulk and Booster head L Slim Wilmot thanked area citizens and businesses for support aiding local high school athletics.
Miss Kathleen Hos tetler and assistant Irene Winkler announce the summer hours for Rittman Public Library. The library will be open 3 to 5 pm and 6 30 to 8 30 pm Monday through Friday, closed all day Saturday in July and August.
The week’s games include Rotary versus Trogdon's Grocery on Friday June 29 60 p.m. Freed battles Butcher on Saturday June 30 Chamber faces Moose on Sunday July 1 and makeup games run through Monday July 2 at the CBC diamond behind Strickland's Garage.
About 950 people attended the second Rittman Merchants Crazy Buck auction on the square Saturday evening. The event is one of 10 weekly Saturday auctions with Crazy Bucks redeemable for prizes including a color TV and local cash script. Next sale is 8:30 pm Saturday north of the square. rain date moves to city building auditorium.
Dorothy Eaton paid 10 and costs for driving without a license. Eugene McCrobie fined 10 and costs on two counts of driving without a license. Kenneth Steele charged with operating under the influence, fined 100 and costs plus three days in jail and 5 and costs for leaving the scene. James Ellis charged with reckless driving fined 10 and costs.
Rittman firemen were called at 7 40 pm Monday to extinguish a fire in a car motor on Sterling Avenue. Damage was minor and no injuries were reported. The blaze is believed to have started when gasoline was poured into the carburetor by the owner.
A scanned notice item lists diverse local shops and products including Barlett's Flower Shoppe Wayne Packing Co Dari-Land and Glen Mar Camera Shop. It mentions items such as electric appliances, paint, carpet cleaning certificates, tobacco and ice cream, two dozen rubber toys and four cartons of cigarettes.
At a Monday meeting two residents urged a building code for Rittman while opposing a zoning shift from R-1 to R-2 along E Sunset Drive north to Frederick Street. The council reviewed a North Main Street zoning change, approved vacating an unused street on W Sunset, and heard broad complaints about sidewalks sewer work and drainage issues including a Shaffer Building site and lawn care for local alleys.
The Rittman council unanimously amended a local ordinance requiring mufflers at least as effective as factory units. The measure, effective immediately, targets loud Hollywood style mufflers amid complaints from residents.
Residents note a 1954 Rittman School vote of $912000 for new buildings and praise memory of Evelyn Grant aiding arthritis relief. Bob Wenger named Rittman American Legion Post commander as council approves mosquito spray bids and alley drive slow signs. The council also plans sidewalk improvements and lot mowing options for residents.
Mayor John Baldwin appoints James W Frye, Mrs. George Sandrock, and Bob Reiss to a three member committee to study the railroad crossing situation in Rittman. The group will meet soon and may involve railroad representatives. The move follows recent fatal and injury incidents near crossings and concerns about automatic signals at Main Street crossings.
Two evening games set for Monday at North Street School as part of the summer recreation program. At 6 30 Hank Gaborsky's team faces John Miracle's squad, followed by Oscar Perry and Jim Goffinet leading their teams at 8.
