City Manager Willard Laughlin reports an offer to buy vacant West Ohio Avenue land once owned by the Post Office Department for 9009 dollars. Appraised by the General Administration, the site could become a downtown parking lot with costs charged to merchants, or a future public park if parking is rejected.
C B Shook received a 50 year pin from the Rittman Volunteer Fire Department at a dinner with members and wives in attendance. A founder and longtime member, he helped organize the department in 1917, served as fire chief and treasurer, and contributed to equipment upgrades and local education and church work.
The defeated Rittman Ohio school bond faced questions as PTA survey responses surfaced. Citizens blamed tax opposition and misconceptions while concerns over cost, space efficiency, and future expansion influenced views. Board notes the plan priced at 1.185 million dollars with 970k for construction and 18 percent for operating expenses.
Fran Sandrock chronicles a solo vacation voyage by small four seat Piper Cherokee in a two part series. Her brother Bill pilots the craft with Barb as co-pilot as they tour from Ohio to Indiana Illinois Iowa and toward California amid changing skies and crosswinds.
A Citizens Committee for Review of the High School Seah asks the School Board for discussion after a May 10 letter went unanswered. Led by F O Kanehl and backed by about 100 residents, the group seeks an alternative proposal and timely talks before the August 12 bond deadline.
Roger Ramsier, son of Mr and Mrs Don Ramsier of 37 Sheldon, was wounded May 6 while manning a machine gun with Company A 1 327 Infantry 1st Abn. After being hit in the back by a shell fragment he was evacuated by helicopter to a base camp for treatment. He sustained shoulder and arm injuries and will remain on light duty until fit to return to combat. Another paratrooper was killed and a third injured in the same advance. A sub committee reported no reply by May 10 to the Board of Education letter. The group at the Public Library urged continued efforts to meet the school board. E R Ramsier to lead a three member panel to study government form changes.
The NLRB's Cleveland office said it expects a ruling in two to three weeks on the Teamsters appeal of the June 7 PCA election. The Teamsters seek to take bargaining rights for about 1,000 PCA workers from IBPMPW. The AFL-CIO affiliate had called coercion and undue interference, citing a PCA manager letter urging a vote for the AFL affiliate.
Roger Cloud state auditor will release the latest audit and examination report covering all Wayne County townships except Baughman Canaan Chester Chippewa and Wooster. The clerks offices will host the release on Thursday and the examiner's reports will be open for public inspection.
The Fixler family held its 59th annual reunion at Central Park with 53 attendees. Organizers included Clarence Kunkler Bertha Simonton and Glen Rickert from Ohio. The farthest traveler was Muriel Alexander of Anderson Indiana. Members came from Cleveland Sharon Center Akron Barberton Seville Wadsworth and Rittman. The 1967 June reunion will be hosted by Mary Jane Smoyer of Seville.
Albert Schaad of Rittman Moose Lodge No. 860 received the Pilgrim degree of merit during the 1966 Moose international convention at Mooseheart Illinois. The investiture was led by Director General Paul P Schmitz with Pilgrim Governor Rodney H. Brandon and Junior Governor Jack Stoehrt in attendance.
