An Ohio Edison official cited an arc at the Sterling Road sub station as the cause of Monday evening’s South End outage, with a scorched bird found as the possible culprit. Tuesday’s citywide blackout had no known cause and lasted under an hour with limited damages.
Dennis Antram of Carrollton Ohio wins approval as band director at Barberton High School replacing Gene Sharick. The 22 year old Malvern High School and Baldwin Wallace College graduate will earn 5000 dollars salary plus 605 dollars for extra band work. Antram has a twin brother Dale who works for the Wooster Daily Record.
The Rittman Jaycees launched teen-age sponsored dances starting June 10 at the Central Park Pavilion with weekly Friday events through June July and August. Music by records and chaperones will accompany each dance. On June 2 the group met at the Kroger lot to travel to Worthington to visit the Ohio Railroad Museum, each bringing a family picnic.
The school board plans a public hearing on the proposed budget July 13 at 8 p.m. The tentative budget totals 805 346 with allocations for Administration 25700 Instruction 535146 Coordinated Activities 600 Libraries 13200 Transportation 15000 Playground 2400 Operations of Plant 102400 Maintenance 22300 Fixed Charges 88600. Citizen input urged. bond issue fallout discussed. Sylvan Wiles resigns after six and a half years.
Umpires aged 18 or older are needed for Tuesday and Thursday evening games. Pay is $1 per game. Interested readers should contact Ike Ramster at 925-1491. Little League starts Monday June 20 with managers notifying all boys.
Marsha Harris, an undergraduate piano major at Kent State University, received the $100 Presser Founda tion Award for excellence in music. She maintains a 3.5 GPA and plans to teach in elementary or high school after graduation next year. Harris participates in KSU's band and is a member of Oratorio Guild Tau Beta Sigma and Delta Omicron. She also works as a teletype setter for the Rittman Press in the summer.
The Board of Education approves a new social studies curriculum for grades 1 through 6 to run four years at an estimated total cost of 3200 dollars. Grade one focuses on exploring with friends, grade two on needs, grade three on teamwork, grade four on regional studies, grade five on the Western Hemisphere, and grade six on the Old World. The Follett Publishing Company series is adopted to unify material and reduce repetition with enhanced visual aids for lower grades.
The Wadsworth Rittman Hospital Association wins a $15 million bond issue with underwriter Ball Burge and Kraus at 4 1/8 percent to fund a new 100 bed hospital. The district gains Medicare eligibility as one of 225 Ohio community hospitals meeting anti discrimination laws. The sale opened Wednesday evening to multiple underwriters including Prescott and Co Merrill Turber Fahey Clark and Saunders Stiver.
Mrs Sarah Pugh celebrated her 100th birthday last Friday and received 204 cards. Gifts included a autographed baseball and a card from the Cleveland Indians, plus notes from Lyndon Johnson and Bob Secrist. Mr Hugh Strickland sent four insulated glasses with Indians players’ pictures.
City officials report McElwee and Gish attorneys have filed for conclusions of law and fact, signaling a potential appeal after Judge Miller's injunction ruling. If appealed, a briefing phase would proceed over months before the appellate case advances.
The summer park program starts June 20 with activities from 9 30 to 11 30 across six parks American Legion Central Front Grandview Sunset. The Rittman Temple Corporation hosts the annual strawberry festival at Central Park on Fridays in June from 3:30 to 7:30 pm. Adults pay $1, children 6 to 12 pay 50 cents, under six eat free. Sandwiches offered at extra cost.
