Ninth Round Word Is Future To Karen Ninth

Karen McComas, 13, of Akron and First Street school, was eliminated in round nine at the national spelling championships in Washington D C after missing "shallot" in a field of 22 remaining competitors. The Akron Beacon Journal sponsored her. top prizes total 5700 with $1000 for the champ and a New York trip.

Council Awards Sewage Bonds to Pool and Company

Pool and Company of Cincinnati won the $270,000 sewage bond contract at an adjourned council session. The bid carried 3.625 percent rate with a premium of 1701.71 dollars. Six other firms submitted bids. Bond payments extend 27 years with $10,000 principal annual payments. Next council meeting is Monday.

Recognition Day Honors West Hill Sixth Graders

Recognition Day at West Hill School honored Mrs Mary Holt sixth graders with special awards certificates spelling ribbons and seals. Top performers included Van Peterman for highest Ohio Scholastic average Carolyn Jensen represented at the Orrville spelling bee and students honored for effort cooperation and attitude.

Perfect Marks For Five Students

Elizabeth Hostetler Marilyn Laurer and Ed Weideman earned all A's at Rittman High School in the last semester per Principal John Heter. Other seniors with two B's and rest A's include Doris Bauman Linda Campbell Anne Melenbacker Shari Sandrock Allan Weber Gary Zollinger and Tom Gwaltney. Nancy Griffith was the lone junior with all A's. married classmates with one or two B's were Ronny Kuntz Bruce Leatherman Kay Carey Marsha Harris Barbara Hauenstein Barbara Lewis Doris Long and Pam Scheffner. No sophomores had all A's. Honor roll names included Robert McComnas Joyce Crabtree Janie Pyle Sharon Steiner. Kathy Melenbacker was the only freshman with all A's. Plans for Bang-up Carni-Fair Aug 7–11 Hailed by Local Groups

Carni-Fair organizers led by Dee Freed with American Legion Lions Club and Rittman Fire Department sponsor a five day event on the Diversion Hall lot. Attractions include ferris wheel rides booths and a teen dance with nightly attendance prizes including AM FM radio a Singer sweeper a GE disposal a power lawn mower a bicycle and a GE portable dishwasher plus 100 if present. Proceeds fund eyeglasses for the needy firemen equipment and community projects.

Recess Extends Talks Between PCA and Pulp Union

Contract negotiations between Packaging Corporation of America and the International Brotherhood of Pulp Sulphite and Paper Mill Workers are recessed until next Monday. The current contract expires June 15 and a union notice ends the agreement then unless extended. Management cites deadlock on union demands affecting plant operations while offering a monetary settlement if issues are resolved. Local 150 represents about 1,200 hourly workers. union comments were not available.

Three Stores Hold Open House In New Locations Saturday

Rittman area residents may tour three newly relocated businesses and a remodeled venue this Saturday. Lawsons Ideal Beauty Salon and Varisco Plumbing will open in a new East Ohio Avenue building with prizes, plus an air conditioned 1800 square foot Lawson unit and new toy department. Varisco displays built in kitchens and DIY items, Ideal Beauty adds eight new dryers and two private color stations, while the Rittman Bowling Center reopens after interior revamp with exhibition by famed bowler Steve Nagy. Four operators and one receptionist will staff the 65 by 20 salon in a contemporary setting with perfumed reception area.

Two Local Youth Appear In Court

Rittman High School graduates will recall the final week of school as two local youths had their licenses revoked for two years after consuming intoxicants in a motor vehicle. Judge Myron T Brenneman sentenced them on Friday. One 1-year old was charged with reckless driving after wrecking his car while drinking. the accident occurred two weeks ago the night before baccalaureate services.

Doylestown High School appoints new principal next year

Doylestown High School will have a new principal next year as Herbert E Bennett resigns effective June 30 after five years in the role. He will become secondary curriculum coordinator with North Olmsted city schools, starting August 1. Bennett lives at 396 High Street with his wife and two sons and has been active in Wayne education, including county executive secretary, Kent State Wadsworth branch board chairman, and at the high school as athletic director, Student Council sponsor, National Honor Society adviser, and PTA curriculum chair.

Services Held For John Butcher 57

Services were held Monday for John Butcher 57 of 8 North Hic kin Avenue who died Thursday night at Wadsworth Municipal Hospital after a four month illness. He owned Ann's Restaurant on East Ohio Avenue for ten years. Born in Fairmont West Virginia he had lived in Cleveland then Rutman. Survived by wife Annas a son John Franklin two daughters Carol Jean and Delores Banfield two brothers Frank of Cleveland four sisters Mary Starr Helen Gimna Anne Glynn Elizabeth Grover and two grandchildren. Burial was in Rutman Cemetery. Gillman Haines Funeral Home in charge.

Rittman Scout Float Wins Second Place at Chippewa Circus

Rittman Pack 3400 cub scouts entered 12 floats in Wadsworth’s Chippewa Circus parade drawing 500 spectators. The group won a gold cup and second prize while Darryl Rastorfer earned an official cub scout knife for selling the most tickets. Other awards plus numerous arrows and badges were given at a Diversion Hall pack meeting.

Firefighters Respond as Car Fire Causes $20 Damage

Firemen were called to a small motor fire on Monday at the corner of Fourth Street and West Ohio Avenue. The blaze caused $20 damage to a car owned by Jerry Rudy of 192 Metzger Avenue and was extinguished before the fire trucks arrived.

Local Merchants Rally Over Parking Contract Plans

Local merchants expressed hope for a quicker contract signing and reactivation of the chamber of commerce off street.
