Dear Graduate Inspires Bridge Builder Ethos

Fifteen Children Fostered by Loving Akron Woman

Mrs. Moss Robinson of Akron has cared for fifteen foster children in ten years, taking in abused and neglected kids from broken homes. She began after three boys lost their mother, later helped Linda and Larry, Susie and Judy, Blond Billy, and many other youths, with support from Wayne County Child Welfare. Her husband supports Jimmie, a two-year-old colored child, and Ann Elizabeth helps with the group.

Some Progress in PCA Union Contract Talks

Negotiations between Packaging Corporation of America and the International Brotherhood of Pulp Sulphite and Paper Mill Workers Local 150 continue with signs of progress. The contract expires June 15 after talks since April 9 and daily sessions since May 15. The union seeks 21 major changes plus 25 to 30 cents an hour in economic benefits including higher insurance and bonuses. A federal mediator joined May 15 with no agreement, daily meetings since then, and union approval to strike if positions do not shift.

PCA Names New Sales Manager

Theodore Foster II is appointed paperboard sales manager for the Eastern Region of Packaging Corporation of America. Foster will headquarter in the Eastern Region offices in Rittman after previously working as a New York City paper board salesman. Joseph F. Schrof becomes Foster’s successor as New York office manager in Filer City Michigan plant.

Services Held For Henry Jackson 65

Services were held Thursday at First Brethren Church for Henry J. Jackson aged 65 of 37 North Seneca Street who died Monday at Orrville Osteopathic Hospital after a long illness. He retired from Packaging Corporation of America January 1 after 32 years as a store supervisor. A native of Dalton, he lived in Marshallville, then moved to Rittman in 1940. Survivors include his wife Carrie two sons Edward of Westerville and Harrison Heady of Elkhart three grandchildren. Military rites were by Orrville American Legion Post and burial in Orrville Cemetery. Reverend Charles Turner officiated Gillman Haines Funeral Home in charge.

Harold Walker to Lead Lions Club New Year

Harold Walker is slated to be the new president of the Lions Club with Tom Haines Charles Rupp and Oscar Miracle as vice presidents. New directors and officers will be installed Monday evening by District Governor elect Nelson Reed of Doylestown.

Summer Typing May Be Offered At Rittman High School

A summer typing program for students and adults may be offered if demand exists. Registrations were distributed at Rittman High School. If enough interest, a six week course runs June 11 to July 27 with vacation week July 4. Classes meet weekdays 8 to 10 am for 60 hours and earn one quarter credit.

Doris Batman Wins Scholarship at PTA Awards

Doris Mae Bauman daughter of Mr and Mrs Marvin Bauman won the PTA scholarship valued at 200 dollars for an education major. The two year award will be presented by PTA President E J Hanson during Friday commencement exercises.

Strawberry Festival at Rittman Temple Lawn

The Carl W Ellenwood Masonic Lodge and Rittman Chapter of Order of Eastern Stars host a Strawberry Festival on Friday June 15 on the lawn between Hugh Strickland residence and Rittman Temple Corporation property at 1612 South Main Street. Food from the McCartneys of Doylestown supports the Temple Corporation building fund.

Summer problems bug Town Council meeting

Council met in air conditioned chambers for an hour to tackle summer issues. Mosquito spraying was debated but rejected due to cost at 5400 dollars and potential lawsuits. Yard cleanup deadlines remain July 1 with city mowing if unpaid. Water system red water reports and sewage discharge permit discussed. Council criticized early newspaper reporting of personnel appointments.

Boy Bitten Sparks Akron Police Warning

A five year old Wright Street boy is hospitalized after a jogger bit off part of his upper lip. Edward Ball fined five dollars for not restraining the dog. police warn stricter enforcement of dog confinement laws and hospital bills may be charged to owners for injuries.
