A small tornado touched down on the northeast edge of Rittman Friday afternoon, causing damage to the Simons and Neuffer properties on Eastern Road near Route 57. A barn door was torn off and a large tree fell. both homes reported damage, with debris scattered across yards. The instance mirrors a historically severe July Fourth storm that caused major flooding and millions in losses.
Fire insurance rates in Rittman rise as the Ohio Inspection Bureau reclassifies the city to Class Seven from Six. Rates hike on brick structures and contents, with homeowners and rental properties also up, effective July 21. A bureau review recommends upgrades to fire protection including ladders and power for pumping.

Wayne County Joint Vocational School will begin adult education in September after daily classes dismiss. Open to anyone 16 or older not in full time schooling. New superintendent Larry Stucky told the Rittman Board of Education that a deficit of about 114 000 is projected due to inflation, rising teacher pay, transportation to the Wayne County Joint Vocational School, and operating costs for the new high school. He warned the district may seek as much as five mills via an operating levy and possible bond issue for the November ballot. He urged patience and urged patrons to contact state lawmakers for aid, noting a potential tax relief on flood victims could reduce this year’s budget.
Prxecutive vice president A J Broadhurst announces a Small Business Administration representative will be at Rittman Savings Bank Friday July 2 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The session invites businessmen property owners and others who suffered flood damages to discuss loans for replacing losses including residence furnishings.
Wayne County received 92743.77 on July 22 from Ohio Edison Company via Rittman District Manager G E Falk to County Treasurer Ethel M Parker. Edison’s 1968 property taxes in Wayne County total 185481.54 with about 156214.78 for schools.
