Soldier Ballots Open Paths For Forces Voting From Afar
The army and Navy voters can request absentee ballots without prior registration. Applications may come from soldiers themselves or through spouses and relatives using special forms. Ballots go by air mail and are returned in a multi envelope system with notarized attestations and a witnessing officer. Voting runs August 9 to noon November 7 with relative applications due by noon November 4.

Doylestown Dog Found To Have Been Rabid
A dog taken into custody at the J W Downs home in Doylestown showed a positive test for rabies. Two family members were bitten and are receiving treatment. The dog was confined after becoming vicious and its head sent to the health department for examination.

Jackson soldier credited with killing 80 on Bougainville
Sergeant Melvin W. Lucas of Jackson Ohio led a small reconnaissance group during fierce fighting along Empress Augusta Bay on Bougainville. His unit reportedly killed more than eighty Japanese as they repelled a counterattack while taking casualties including three wounded and Lucas earning a Purple Heart. Lucas served since 1941 with the 37th Infantry Division. Six local draftees were classified L A by the Orrville draft board.

Seville Pilot Earns Air Medal For Bombing Missions
First Lieutenant Glen A. Tisher of Seville has been awarded the Air Medal for meritorious achievement in aerial combat. He flies a B-24 Liberator in the Eighth Air Force from England and has completed six bombing missions over Germany and occupied Europe. He entered the Army in 1942 and has been overseas since April 1944.
