A June 30 letter from Pfc. Germain Chenal APO 230 NY describes rough weather, foxhole life, and front-line impressions in France. The note mentions landing shortly after harbor entries, German demoralization, and local French kindness. It also lists the Ray Yochheim family, Ray in Maryland training, and four Rittman men beginning naval indoctrination at Great Lakes with full names and addresses.

Cpl Herb Liechty returned July 11 to Kelly Field San Antonio Texas after furlough with his wife on Wadsworth road He works in airplane radar and will continue training after 47 weeks of schooling He plans more instruction on his return Petty Officer 1/c Wm Otis Wallace and wife Ethel Newcomer of Wadsworth are on a 30 day leave vacationing in California.
Eddie Jackson meets brother Harrison Cady in the South Pacific after three years apart. Ed’s ship nears his brother’s vessel as a Marine pilot helps him aboard for an hour visit. Ronald Boling, among Rittman’s early 1941 recruits, returns home on furlough after nearly three years in Panama. Yula Borisic trains at Bethesda and joins the WAVES. New addresses list Skelly brothers at Little Creek and Camp Lee, Bud Hoover in France with APO 290, Joe McGorry in France, and Richard Stronz at APO 263 Camp Bowle Texas.
C P Lindecamp, long prominent in Wayne County education as Sterling elementary principal, is selected to lead Martin's Ferry High School overseeing 32 teachers and about 820 students. He previously headed Sullivan Schools in Ashland County for eight years.
CHICK PLAHATA notes two former neighbors in Netts Ohio were harmed by a mine rescue efforts follow the Bellaire disaster. During Presbyterian Children's Day exercises Billy Blunt stepped to the rostrum and asked permission to run home to tell his parents he must use the bathroom, prompting hearty laughter from the congregation.

Mrs. Margaret Layton of Orrville received a letter from the commander confirming Lt. Francis D. Layton, pilot of the Speaker-Lou B-24 Liberator, went missing over Austria on May 24. The message says their bomber was attacked by German fighters near a mountain area 40 miles from Vienna after completing a bomb run. one motor was smoking as the plane dived, no parachutes seen. The commander urges caution about optimism and notes if Layton is a prisoner he will be treated under international rules, praising Layton as a top pilot and saying his loss will be deeply felt.
Creston Lions Club organized a Fourth of July jubilee to aid local Boy Scouts. A large crowd attended the afternoon softball tournament and evening entertainment. The Akron Area Boy Scout band directed by J C Hiestand performed. A greased pig contest raised funds, with E Farnwalt catching the pig and selling it for ten dollars to Harry Hawk. Net receipts expected to total about 175 dollars for Scout equipment.
John Kohler, formerly of Rittman, was fined $100 and costs in Mayor John Baldwin's court Tuesday night after being charged with driving while intoxicated. He reportedly crashed his car into an Erie railroad light standard on S Main Street Monday night.
The War Production Board will require approval to buy lumber after August 1. The board gains overall control of the lumber trade, covering households and industrial users. Farmers fall under the War Food Administration, which will arrange lumber access. all others must go through the War Production Board.
Rotary district governor Harry Votan of Akron outlined Rotary International plans for a postwar work pile to cushion industrial reconversion. He urged Rittman to follow Mayor Baldwin's postwar survey and noted a foundation fund of one million dollars to restore Rotarians and their families in Nazi-occupied countries.
Ceiling prices for used cars became effective July 10 as fixed by the War Price and Rationing Board. Buyers should obtain the exact ceiling by providing car specifics to a Price Clerk who will confirm base or warranted price plus approved extras. A certificate of transfer must be completed and signed by buyer and seller.
A meeting in Rittman at City Hall prepared new Cub Scouts with about 50 parents and boys listening to speakers from Akron and Wadsworth districts. Weldon Hardgrove will lead enrollment as Cubmaster in a Lions Club sponsored program for boys up to age 12 not yet eligible for Boy Scouts.

Sts Peter and Pauls Parish in Doylestown will hold its annual carnival on the parish grounds Saturday evening July 22. The high school band will provide the music and the public is invited to attend.
The Cleveland Selective Service Board reports a call for 93 men to report for pre-induction examinations on August 30 at the induction station. No induction call has been received yet. Earlier records show a July schedule of five men for induction on the 28th and five for pre-induction on the 29th.
The Farmers Sportsman's Assn of Rittman sponsors a field trial Sunday July 23 north of Rittman with a 160 purse. Heat money pays 8 and 4 dollars. entry 3 dollars before midnight and 4 dollars until 1 pm. Dogs are trucked out for the trials. admission is 30 cents. Proceeds aid restocking. Lunch and refreshments on grounds near the Rittman square.
The heat wave and drought ended as two hard Thursday showers arrived at noon and 4 p m Wednesday. Rittman felt slight benefits from a storm’s southern edge that already damaged crops Sunday, while the showers soaked ground and restored sleep to homes still scorched from weeks of heat.
The First Brethren church hosts a special speaker event with Rev Elias Zimmerman and Christian Jew on Wednesday July 19 at 8 p m. The public is invited to attend this religious talk at the church.
Village council plans to decide whether to buy Reserve Power Co following a proposed domestic rate reduction and five year term. Ralph Winter of Cleveland urged bidders to cover village costs if the bond fails. The panel also approved sewer reconstruction bids from Willow Brook to N suave Street.
