Sterling United Brethren Church Sunday services canceled

There will be no Sunday School or church at the Sterling United Brethren Church this Sunday July 22 due to the pastor’s absence. On July 29 there will be regular Sunday School at 9:45 followed by a short worship service under the Guild Girls.

The Rittman Garden Club will meet at the home of Mr. and Mrs. K. W. Osborne for a picnic supper on Tuesday evening, July 24, at 6 30.

Infant Hockensmith Dies in Barberton Burial in Rittman Cemetery

Terry Hockensmith, two months old and son of Mr and Mrs Harvey Hockensmith, formerly of Rittman, died Friday in Barberton. Funeral services were held Sunday with burial in Rittman Cemetery. He is survived by his parents and a two year old brother Larry.

Sgt and Mrs James Rich visited the Harold Rich home on Tuesday evening. Sgt Rich returned from Europe Tuesday morning. Mrs Walter Anderson left Monday for a week with her husband in Providence R I. He will ship out next week to the west coast. Misses Margaret Wenger and Naomi Freeman took a weekend cruise on Lake Erie to Cedar Point. Mrs Joe Brown, ill for some time, was taken to Wadsworth Hospital for observation. Marie Evans has returned home after weeks with her husband in New York. Mrs Andrew Graham underwent an operation at Wadsworth Hospital Thursday. Mr Mrs Justin Shook and son Duane and Mr and Mrs Harry Chase of Creston attended the funeral of aunt Mrs Eula Rauschenberg at St Clairsville Ohio Monday. Roy Forrer is ill at home on Sterling Ave. Donald Hawkins of Cleveland spent the weekend with his family living with Dr E R Alexander. Misses Jerrine Ferrer Jacquie Britton Clara Serjack Lorainne Graf Wanda Jan Velda Wald and Shirley stypists plan next week at Chippewa Lake. chaperon Mrs Justin Shook. Dorrince Hess, son of Mr and Mrs Omar Hess, had tonsils removed Wednesday July 11. Ervin Fritz was an operative patient at Mercy Hospital in Canton Friday July 13. Margaret Giet, daughter of Mr and Mrs Gustave Giet, underwent an operation at Wadsworth Hospital Tuesday.

Story Hour Draws Children to Rittman Library

The Story Hour, sponsored by the Rittman Mothers Club, has drawn steady attendance this summer with about twenty five children each week. Open to kindergarten age and up, the program meets every Tuesday at 2 30 p m in the Rittman Public Library.

Daughters Have Tonsils Removed at Wadsworth Hospital

Mrs. Yovan Borish's four daughters had their tonsils removed Friday morning at Wadsworth Hospital. Various relatives visited Cleveland and Detroit over the week. Holstein breeder Joseph Ramsier of Rittman joined 58 others as new member in national association.

Staff Sergeant John E. Steiner Praised for Luzon Service

John E. Steiner husband of Monna Steiner of 122 W 1st St Rittman Ohio promoted to staff sergeant. He served with the 38th Cyclone Division on Luzon east of Manila and saw action against the Japanese Shimbu Line. Steiner was with Headquarters Company 3rd Battalion 162nd Infantry overseas 18 months with earlier service in Hawaii New Guinea and Leyte.

Ensign Kenneth Hilty left yesterday for his base in Banana River Florida after an eight day furlough here. He is returning to duty and his station was listed locally as his home area.

SGT Don James departs today for Bloomington Illinois after visiting sister Mrs H L Davidson. He has served 38 months in the Pacific theater and was at Pearl Harbor during the December 7 1941 attack.

Mougey War Vet Nominated Acting Postmaster Here

Sgt Herald W Mougey, a World War II veteran injured in Germany, was recommended Tuesday for Acting Postmaster by Congressman W R Thom. If confirmed by Congress he will assume duties August 1, replacing Robert J Hickin who resigned to enter private business. Mougey, 28, a native of Rittman, is a former employee of Ohio Boxboard and B F Goodrich. He was discharged July 13 after service with the 97th Division, and now resides with his wife and son on North Third Street, walking with a cane.

Rittman Softball Beats Seville in Tight 12-10 Game

Rittman softball, after two opening losses to out-of-town teams, found its punch last Friday night under the lights and defeated Seville 12-10. Don Baker cleared the bases with a late-inning home run as the Gerdenslager lineup from Wooster visits tonight. Tennis courts have also opened for play since last Wednesday per recreation director Clyde Kindig.

Boxboard Wins WPB Nod for 275000 Plant Addition

The Ohio Boxboard Co. received War Production Board approval Tuesday to expand with a $275,000 facility in Washington. The project, not given priority, will add corrugated containers and car tons space at the northeast end of the current complex. Company officials noted material shortages and tight labor as challenges. New maintenance superintendent Pyam Williams, former assistant power superintendent, succeeds T. B. McConnell. Lt. Glen Tisher, back from England after 37 months with the Eighth Air Force, returns to assist the personnel department and will pilot a B-24 during his temporary assignment.

Lake storm and fire ravage Great Lakes cruise fleet

Rittman residents watched a fierce Lake Huron storm and a fire at Point Edward Ontario. The luxury ship Hamonic burned at the pier as Dr. and Mrs. O J Shong had just returned from a cruise. The Port Huron to Mackinac race yachts were scattered and damaged, with Jeda losing rigging. Passengers on the Roosevelt suffered sore delays, while the Alabama faced ruined carpeting and lounge chairs aboard returning from Leamington.
