Blood donors urged for August blood bank drive

Blood donors are still needed call today. Fifty more volunteers joined this week raising the total to 90 toward a goal of 180 for the August 14 Blood Bank. The appeal stresses patriotic duty and urges new volunteers aged 18 to 60 who are healthy and free of major surgery in the last year. Names of those already signing up are listed along with committee co chairmen and volunteer chairs across several towns.

Rittman Crackdown Fines Fourteen Speeders in Mayor Court

The Rittman crackdown on speeders continues as fourteen violators appeared before Mayor John Baldwin. Fines ranged from 3 to 20 dollars plus costs for speeding and related offenses. several others were fined for traffic light violations and for operating without an operator's license.

Gordon 50th anniversary open house in Rittman area

Mr. and Mrs. Alfred B Gordon celebrate 50 years of marriage with an open house at their home 56 West Ohio in Rittman on Sunday July 28 from 2 to 5 pm. No formal invites. Mass of Thanksgiving follows at 8 am at St Ann's Church. They married August 1, 1907 in Doylestown. They have two daughters and two sons, 11 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Put sewer bonds on Nov ballot in Rittman

Rittman voters will decide at the November election on a bond issue of 125000 to build two interceptor sanitary sewers. The move was approved at an emergency city council meeting after a needed Board of Public Works letter prompted action. The project funds include 18000 leftover from 1952 construction, with one sewer on Sterling Ave and another from the plant to newly annexed areas.

Funeral services for James Hile a 66 year old former Rittman resident were held Sunday in Monroe Michigan after an illness of several months He is survived by his wife Mary two daughters Mrs Edna Volpi of Monroe and Mrs Pauline Bailey of Tecumseh Mich a son Kenneth of Monroe a sister Mrs R D Shook a niece Mrs Ralph E Fisher a nephew Weldon E Shook and several relatives in the Rittman area

Rotary wives invited to hear Iron Curtain talk

Wives of Rotarians are invited to the Rittman Rotary Club meeting next Thursday July 25 as Russell W Frey publisher of the Rittman Press presents a slide talk on his automobile trip behind the Iron Curtain. Colored slides depict life in Poland East Germany and Czechoslovakia with notes on trip dangers and communist controlled cities. Frey is also slated to speak at the St Clairsville Club on Aug 26.

Homecoming Grand Prize Display Sunday

Rittman homecoming preparations begin Sunday with the grand prize display at Gable's Acc-Hi on South Ohio. The prize is an outboard motor boat and trailer, awarded to the holder of a lucky number. The Legion Grounds on E Sunset hosts the event with concessions run by the Lions American Legion and Volunteer Fire Department. Proceeds benefit the three sponsoring groups and include rides for children and the young at heart.

Mrs Ida Blough Lambert rites held in Sterling

Services were held Monday at Gillman Funeral Home for Mrs Ida Blough Lambert 91 who died Friday night at her daughter’s home. Born in Milton Township she lived here all her life and belonged to Ev United Brethren Church American Legion Auxiliary and Missionary Society. Survived by two daughters four sons 16 grandchildren 11 great grandchildren 11 great great grandchildren two sisters and one brother. Interment Mount Zion Cemetery near Sterling. Local 150 OKs seven to ten cent raise and vacation extension

The contract, approved two weeks earlier by the union negotiating committee and management reps, raises pay seven to ten cents per hour based on job classification and adds a four week vacation for employees with 25 or more years of service. Union meetings at Rittman High heard Burke praise progress and shared credits for improved conditions, while noting many workers were on vacation.

Budget Not Available For Public Until Council Meeting Next Monday

The proposed city budget for 1958 will not be open for public inspection until the council meeting next Monday night. City clerk John Zivick cited heavy work as the reason. Public hearings will follow the advertised notice, with a preliminary form likely to be adopted.

Firefighters Stop Trash Can Blaze Saving City Funds

Dale Widmer Lewis Hoover and Bill Davis quickly tackled a trash can fire at the corner of Ohio and Main St saving the city about $100. Davis alerted volunteers who refused to respond and the trio used a fire extinguisher from Rich Motors to extinguish the blaze.
